U.S. Highway 51

The southern terminus of U.S. 51 at U.S. 61 in LaPlace. The area is dotted by typical strip mall and shopping plaza development common throughout the Southeast. Originally U.S. 51 continued to the east to New Orleans with U.S. 61 before the Interstate system with constructed. This overlap was done for continuity for traffic bound to Jackson and Memphis out of New Orleans to the north. Photo taken 11/06/99.
Looking in the northbound direction from the location of the above photograph is the first northbound U.S. 51 shield. This highway has been superceded by Interstate 55 through most of the southeast and Interstate 39 through portions of Illinois and Wisconsin. The northern terminus, incidentally, is located at Ironwood, Wisconsin. and sees Photo taken 11/06/99.
Northbound U.S. 51 at the Interstate 10/Exit 209 diamond interchange. Interstate 55 is shown on the guide signage because the U.S. route is the only connection from Interstate 10 east to Interstate 55 north. In the background can be seen the Interstate 55 viaduct itself. Photo taken 06/01.
Approaching the merge of U.S. 51 northbound onto the Interstate 55 viaduct north of Laplace. The old highway continues northward adjacent to the freeway along Peuine Road. Photo taken 10/23/03.
U.S. 51 at the northbound on-ramp to Interstate 55. The two highways overlap northward to the cities of Pontchatoula and Hammond. Traffic continuing straight follows the old two lane U.S. 51. Visible all along Peuine Road to the north are remnants of an even older roadway of the first U.S. 51 on the northbound side. Photo taken 06/01.
A local road (Frenier Road) enters the intersection of U.S. 51 at the Interstate 55 northbound on-ramp from the right. U.S. 51 overlaps with Interstate 55 between Exits 1 and 28. Photo taken 10/23/03.
Interstate 55 & U.S. 51 shield assembly posted at the turn onto Interstate 55. The paired highways see two interchanges with the original U.S. 51 (Exits 7 and 15) on the 21 mile viaduct that travels northward. Photo taken 10/23/03.
