A bank of shields is posted in a traffic island at the U.S. 29 & Alabama 113 merge onto U.S. 31 north. This intersection marks the historic terminus of the original U.S. 331. Before the current incantation of U.S. 331 came into existence, U.S. 331 composed a short route between Pensacola, Florida and Flomaton, Alabama (pop. 1,588). The original U.S. 331 was done away when U.S. 29 was extended southward to Pensacola. Asides from the hamlets of Dixie and Rome, the only significant point of U.S. 29 between Brewton and Andalusia is the junction with Alabama 137. This northbound photograph looks at the northern terminus of the state highway. Alabama 137 is completely amassed within the Conecuh National Forest as it connects U.S. 29 with the Florida state line 14 miles away. Photo taken 11/25/01.
Entering the Andalusia vicinity, U.S. 29 encounters a short overlap with Alabama 55. A shuffle of the area routes occurred with the completion of the northern bypass of the town. With it, Alabama 55 relocated along old U.S. 29 from downtown to this intersection. The two highways than continue northward to U.S. 84. Well within Tuskegee National Forest, U.S. 29 northbound
departs from U.S. 80 east. At this point, an interchange exists to facilitate the adjacent eastern terminus of
Alabama 186. To the north, U.S. 29 travels ten miles to the city of Auburn (pop. 42,987). Alabama 186
doubles back to Exit 42 of Interstate 85. The state route allows Interstate 85 bound motorists convenient access
for U.S. 80 and its destination of Phenix City (pop. 28,265). Photo taken 08/22/03.
