U.S. 11W South
Following U.S. 11W/West Stone Drive south in Kingsport, this junction shield is the first indication of the pending interchange with Interstate 26 and U.S. 23. From this point, Interstate 26 travels southeast to Johnson City, Asheville, Spartanburg, Columbia, and Charleston. To the north, U.S. 23 leads to Gate City, Pikeville, and Columbus. Photo taken 05/31/07.
A closer inspection of the junction shield reveals that the Interstate 26 is neutered (does not have a state name), like nearly all (99.999999%) of all Interstate shields to be found in Tennessee. Photo taken 05/31/07.
The control city for Interstate 26/U.S. 23 south is Johnson City, while the control city for U.S. 23 north is Gate City. Photo taken 05/31/07.
The first ramp connects southbound U.S. 11W with U.S. 23 north to Gate City, followed by the ramp to Interstate 26 east and U.S. 23 south to Johnson City and Asheville, North Carolina. Photo taken 05/31/07.
Shortly thereafter, the next right turn connects to Interstate 26 east and U.S. 23 south to Johnson City and Asheville. This was the former northern terminus of Interstate 181, which was decommissioned north of Interstate 81 in favor of Interstate 26 in 2005. U.S. 11W continues southwest on West Stone Drive. Photo taken 05/31/07.
A closer inspection of the junction shield reveals that the Interstate 26 overhead covers the old Interstate 181 designation and also covers the former cardinal direction banner. Photo taken 05/31/07.
