The reasons to renumber highways in Georgia are good ones. The highway system as it exists today is very confusing. Apparently, GDOT misinterpreted peoples' complains about the legibility of maps to mean cities when what they really meant was the plethora of clustered routes on single roads. No other state has a mess like this, so why do we?
This section of Peach State Roads is a carefully constructed blueprint with cross references to make it possible to reduce or eliminate the excessive number of confusing bannered routes (Spur, Connector, etc), unneccessary overlaps (U.S. 27/GA 1) and state routes duplicating U.S. routes (U.S. 27/GA 27 and I-85/GA 85). Maps will soon be provided for visual representations of different renumbering schemes when time permits.
Georgia has a very difficult to follow highway system because of these reasons, making it more difficult to give directions, use of highway numbers less frequent and the cost of road signage higher. Georgia is one of only four states to have all U.S. and Interstate highways carry separate route numbers, and it is the only state to post these prominently. Please look at these with a map in hand so that you can see that this can be fixed, though significant changes will be required. Included below are tables with full renumbering plans and selected mapped areas showing the changes where explanation is the most difficult.
