W.F. Lynes Parkway

Interstate 516 follows the Georgia 21 W.F. Lynes Parkway between Garden City and Savannah in Chatham County. The four to six lane freeway encircles the western reaches of the city between Hunter Army Airfield and Garden City to the northwest. Built originally as Georgia 26 Loop, the Lynes Parkway was added to the Interstate system in 1985 as Interstate 516. U.S. 17 and 80 were both realigned to share segments with Interstate 516 & Georgia 21 in the 1980s. U.S. 17 again saw realignment in 1992 to coincide with the completion of the new Talmadge Bridge across the Savannah River.

Interstate 516 East
Georgia 21 (Augusta Road) upgrades into Interstate 516 (W.F. Lynes Parkway) at Garden City. The four-lane highway interchanges with Georgia 25 (Brampton Avenue) at Exit 8. Brampton Avenue joins the freeway with Main Street to the north and U.S. 80 & Georgia 26 (Bay Street) to the south. Interstate 516 east & Georgia 21 southbound ascend over the Norfolk-Southern Railroad line ahead of the Exit 7 loop ramp onto Georgia 25 Connector (Bay Street) eastbound. The first Interstate 516 reassurance shield resides at the Lathrop Avenue under crossing ahead of the Exit 7 off-ramp. Georgia 25 follows the original path of U.S. 17 from Interstate 16 northward to Port Wentworth and the Savannah River crossing into South Carolina and the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. Exit 7 leaves Interstate 516 east & Georgia 21-25 southbound for Georgia 25 Connector (Bay Street) east. Bay Street leads east 1.75 miles to the Talmadge Bridge and 2.25 to downtown Savannah. Interstate 516 & U.S. 80 east & Georgia 21-25 south turn southward and cross Louisville Road and a series of Norfolk Southern Railroad lines ahead of the directional-cloverleaf interchange with Interstate 16 (Exit 5). Interstate 16 provides a direct route into central Savannah and Jasper County, South Carolina via the Talmadge Bridge (U.S. 17 & Georgia 404 Spur). A half-diamond interchange brings an southbound on-ramp from Gwinnett Street (Exit 6) ahead of junction Interstate 16 & U.S. 17. Interstate 16 and U.S. 17 share pavement from the Talmadge Bridge approach west to Interstate 516 (Exit 5). U.S. 17 southbound merges onto Interstate 516 with U.S. 80 and company for one mile to Exit 3. U.S. 17 originally followed Georgia 25 north to Port Wentworth, with U.S. 17 Alternate entailing the original Talmadge Bridge across the Savannah River from downtown. Exit 5 handles movements to both Interstate 16 west to Macon and Interstate 16 east & U.S. 17 north to downtown Savannah. Interstate 16 east provides connections to Georgia 204 (37th Street / Abercorn Street) and the one-way street couplet of Montgomery Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard outside the central business district. Constructed in the early 1990s, the formerly Southwest Parkway, constitutes a full freeway between Interstate 516 & Georgia 21 (Lynes Parkway) and Georgia 204 (Abercorn Street Extension) at Southside Savannah. The four-lane freeway allows Interstate 95 traffic a more direct connection to Savannah from the southwest at Richmond Hill. A trumpet interchange facilitates the movements between the Veterans Parkway and Interstate 516 & Georgia 21. The Veterans Parkway includes an interchange with Chatham Parkway midway between its ends at the Lynes Parkway and Georgia 204. Interstate 516 West

The right-hand lane of Interstate 516 west & Georgia 21 north becomes the turn lane for Mildred Street north. A turn lane exists on the eastbound freeway as well. While not Interstate standard, there is no cross traffic permitted between the two sections of Mildred Street. Mildred Street otherwise leads north to Giles Avenue at Heriot Street.
