Interstate 440 / Cliff Benson Beltline

Interstate 440 began on June 9, 1991 when AASHTO approved the number to replaced Business Loop I-40, which was officially decommissioned by AASHTO at the same time that Interstate 440 was created. Initially the route was signed with east/west and north/south banners on the respective legs. Later the route was signed with Inner/Outer banners, as a conventional beltway is. By 2003 however, officials decided to drop both conventions in favor of east and westbound banners to coincide with a truncation of the overlap with Interstate 40 through the south side of Raleigh.

U.S. 1 follows Interstate 440 from its western end at Interstate 40 to Exit 11 (Capital Boulevard). U.S. 64 also follows the route between the east end at Interstate 40 and the Knightdale Bypass (Exit 14).
