A diamond interchange joins Interstate 275 & U.S. 19 north of the Sunshine Skyway with the North Skyway Fishing Pier (a remnant of the original Skyway crossing). Photo taken 03/26/06.
A rest area lies along the southbound side of Interstate 275 & U.S. 19 north of the North Skyway Fishing Pier. The exit also serves Blackthorn Memorial Park, a monument commemorating the largest peacetime loss of life in United States Coast Guard History, the 1980 collision of the CGC Blackthorn (WLB-391) with the oil tanker S.S. Interstate 275 north expands to five lanes in anticipation of the unconstructed St. Petersburg-Clearwater Expressway. Exit 20 was to represent the south end of the unbuilt Interstate grade roadway that would have linked the county seat with Pinellas County's largest city. The freeway was cancelled on May 12, 1978, with a partially-built Exit 20 and a directional interchange between U.S. 19 Alternate and Florida 666 to show for the effort. Photo taken 03/26/06.

A companion ramp stub lies along southbound for what would have been the St. Petersburg-Clearwater Expressway end. 31st Street South otherwise consists of a two-lane through street leading north to Emerald Lake. Exit 22 provides the most direct route to Tropicana Field, a domed stadium that is home of Major League Baseball's Tampa Bay Rays. The venue lies north of Interstate 175 and west of 8th Street South (South Bay Drive's first exit). Interstate 375 (North Bay Drive) east follows from Exit 23 of Interstate 275 north toward the Uptown neighborhood outside of downtown St. Petersburg. The freeway is signed the most direct route to both Baywalk, a downtown shopping center, and The Pier, St. Petersburg's municipal slip into Tampa Bay. The elevated stack interchanges of Interstate 275 with 175 and 375 lie a short distance from one another west of Tropicana Field. Interstate 375 parallels Florida 595 east to the St. Petersburg Coliseum ahead junction Florida 687 (4th Street South). Attached to the highest flyover of the Interstate 275 & 375 stack is the 0.75-mile overhead for 22nd Avenue North (Exit 24). This span was damaged by a tanker explosion on March 27, 2007, an accident so severe that the bridge was closed for several weeks of reconstruction. Photo taken 03/26/06.
One quarter mile south of the Exit 24 diamond interchange with 22nd Avenue North at the 9th Avenue North underpass. Exit 24 joins Interstate 275 with the Ponce DeLeon, Woodlawn, and Euclid neighborhoods nearby. Nearing the west edge of the city, Interstate 275 next meets 38th Avenue North (Exit 25). 38th Avenue North (Pinellas County 184) provides a direct route to the gulf beach cities of Madeira Beach, Redington Beach, and Redington Shores via U.S. 19 Alternate (Tyrone Boulevard) north to Florida 666 (Madeira Beach Causeway) west. The next exit along northbound is Exit 28, Junction Florida 694/Gandy Boulevard. This is a major connection, as Florida 694 is the most direct route onto the U.S. 92/Gandy Bridge to Tampa. Gandy Boulevard is a expressway between U.S. 19 and U.S. 92, but it has traffic signals at several interchanges, including this one with Interstate 275. Northbound Interstate 275 reaches Exit 28, Junction Florida 694/Gandy Boulevard. Florida 694 travels west into Pinellas Park, connecting with U.S. 19 and continuing west to Seminole. The next exit along northbound is Exit 30, Junction Florida 686. This is another major interchange. Florida 686 is Roosevelt Boulevard, which also has expressway features. From Interstate 275, Florida 686 travels southeast to connect with Florida 694 (Gandy Boulevard), Florida 687 (4th Street North), and U.S. 92 near the western end of the Gandy Bridge. In addition, Florida 686 travels northwest along Roosevelt Boulevard, connecting to Florida 688 (Ulmerton Road/134th Avenue North). To reach the St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport, use Florida 686 northeast past the interchange with Florida 688. After the airport, Florida 686 turns due west, following East Bay Drive to Largo and Belleair Shore. Use Florida 686 west to U.S. 19 north to reach the city of Clearwater. Photo taken 11/26/07.
A fourth lane is added to northbound Interstate 275, and it becomes exit only onto Florida 686. Like Florida 694 (Exit 28), Florida 686 eastbound also connects directly onto U.S. 92/Gandy Bridge to Tampa. There is no direct connection from Interstate 275 north to Pinellas County Route 296/118th Avenue North from this interchange, but a connection can be achieved via Florida 686 west to 28th Street North. After this interchange, Interstate 275 turns northeast as it prepares to cross over Tampa Bay, where it leaves Pinellas County and enters Hillsborough County. It will continue in a generally easterly direction until reaching the Interstate 4 interchange (Exit 45B). Note the control city of Lakeland on this mileage sign.
