Interstate 275 Tennessee

All three of Interstate 275's mainline interchanges underwent reconstruction between 2006 and 2007 in anticipation of the Smartfix Interstate 40 project. The original compact cloverleaf interchanges were redesigned to eliminate some of the weaving traffic movements caused by the loop ramps. Thus all of the loop off-ramps were eliminated and traffic movements combined into a reconfigured ramp. Loop ramps to the freeway from the intersecting roadways were redesigned and retained however.

Interstate 275 North
U.S. 441 (Henley Street) northbound approaching the Interstate 275 northbound connector. Direct ramps link U.S. 441 with the 2.98 mile freeway of Interstate 275 at the Interstate 40 stack interchange. U.S. 441 brings traffic northward from Sevierville into the city of Knoxville. Photo taken 08/23/03.
The Interstate 275 freeway essentially begins at the ramp departure from U.S. 441 (Henley Street) northbound. Access to Interstate 40 is full for interests departing the downtown Knoxville and University of Tennessee areas via Henley Street. Photo taken 08/23/03.
Traffic utilizing the Interstate 275 connector from Henley Street drives upon the highest level of the Interstate 40 & 275 stack interchange. Depicted here is the Exit 0A ramp for Interstate 40 eastbound. The flyover merges with traffic emanating from Interstate 275 southbound before entering the Interstate 40 mainline. Photo taken 08/23/03.
Downtown area traffic partitions between the Interstate 40 westbound cloverleaf ramp (Exit 0B) and the Interstate 275 northbound mainline. Traffic from Interstate 40 has yet to merge onto Interstate 275. Therefore only one lane of traffic continue northward at this point. Photo taken 08/23/03.
Leaving the Interstate 40 stack interchange behind on Interstate 275 northbound at the Bernard Avenue undercrossing. The north-south freeway constitutes only four through lanes. The Interstate 40 westbound on-ramp becomes the exit-only ramp for Exit 1A Baxter Avenue eastbound). Photo taken 08/23/03.
A compact full cloverleaf interchange handles the junction of Interstate 275 with Baxter Avenue. Depicted here is the Exit 1A ramp departure for Baxter Avenue eastbound. Baxter Avenue travels nine blocks to its end at Folsom Street to the northeast. This cloverleaf interchange was converted into a partial-cloverleaf interchange during 2006-07 as part of an overall project to redesign Interstate 275. Photo taken 08/23/03.

Interstate 275 northbound at the former Exit 1B cloverleaf ramp to Baxter Avenue westbound. One block to the west Baxter Avenue yields the westbound beginning of Beaumont Avenue. Beaumont Avenue links Baxter and Interstate 275 with Western Avenue (Tennessee State Secondary 62) an important east-west arterial between Knoxville and Oak Ridge. Photo taken 08/23/03.
A short distance to the north of the Exit 1A/B cloverleaf interchange is the former Exit 1C/D cloverleaf; this interchange was converted into a partial-cloverleaf interchange between 2006-07 with the elimination of the Interstate 275 loop ramps. Intersecting the freeway here is the east-west Oldham and Woodland Avenues. The naming convention of the surface street changes from Oldham to Woodland as one travels east under Interstate 275. Photo taken 08/23/03.
Former Exit 1D departs for Oldham Avenue westbound. Woodland & Oldham Avenue represent one of four Norfolk-Southern Railroad crossings between Interstate 40 and Atlantic Avenue. The railroad corridor parallels Interstate 275 in a north-south fashion between Interstate 40 and 640. Photo taken 08/23/03.
The third and final mainline interchange of Interstate 275 was also a full cloverleaf, it is now a six-ramp partial-cloverleaf interchange. Here Heiskell Avenue interacts with the urban loop between Minnesota Avenue and Central Street & Atlantic Avenue. The Exit 2A ramp serves the Arlington and Lincoln Park neighborhoods of the city. Photo taken 08/23/03.
Interstate 275 travels underneath Heiskell Avenue at the former Exit 2B loop ramp onto westbound. Heiskell Avenue in conjunction with Minnesota Avenue and Texas Avenue connects Interstate 275 with Western Avenue through northwest Knoxville. Also displayed here is the one-half mile guide sign for Exit 3 (Interstate 75 & 640 and U.S. 25W). Photo taken 08/23/03.
Continuing northward on the last stretch of Interstate 275. The Heiskell Avenue on-ramp becomes an auxiliary lane for the Knoxville Bypass and U.S. 25W (Clinton Highway). The signs here do not display the fact that Interstate 75 southbound follows Interstate 640 west. Perhaps this is because the signs predate the Interstate 75 relocation onto the Knoxville bypass. Photo taken 08/23/03.
Interstate 275 draws to a close as traffic continues onto Interstate 75 northbound. Exit 3 diverges to the right with a quick partition between ramps to U.S. 25W north (Clinton Highway) and Interstate 75 south & 640 west to the left and Interstate 640 east & U.S. 25W south to the right. Photo taken 08/23/03.
Interstate 275 South
Exit 3 directs Interstate 75 southbound motorists onto Interstate 640 east & U.S. 25W north to Tri-Cities and Asheville. Photo taken 05/01/05.
The southbound beginning of Interstate 275 overtakes the original Interstate 75 beeline toward downtown Knoxville. Pictured here is the first stretch of Interstate 275 as Interstate 75 departs via a one lane off-ramp to the right. The junction between Interstates 75-275-640 & U.S. 25W comprises a multi-level stack interchange. Photo taken 08/23/03.
Traffic wishing to access Interstate 640 east & U.S. 25W southbound from Interstate 75 must utilize a short stretch of Interstate 275 southbound. The cloverleaf ramp therefore utilizes the Exit 3 numbering convention of Interstate 275 rather than Exit 107 of Interstate 75. Interstate 640 & U.S. 25W overlap for seven miles to Interstate 40 in east Knoxville. Photo taken 08/23/03.
Before traffic from Interstate 640 & U.S. 25W has a chance to merge onto Interstate 275 southbound, an Exit 2B overhead for the Heiskell Avenue cloverleaf interchange is posted. The third lane becomes exit only for Heiskell Avenue westbound. This interchange was converted into a partial-cloverleaf interchange between 2006-07. Exits 2B is now Exit 2 as the loop ramp was eliminated. Photo taken 08/23/03.
Interstate 275 southbound reassurance shield, posted between the former Exit 2B/A and Exit 1D/C cloverleaf interchanges. The freeway comprises six lanes between the two east-west arterials with the advent of exit-only auxiliary lanes. Photo taken 08/23/03.
Interstate 275 kinks to the east between Murphy Avenue and the Norfolk-Southern Railroad corridor to the north of the Exit 1D/C interchange. Pictured here is the one-half mile overhead for the Oldham Avenue junction. Imprints remain from Woodland Avenue on the right-hand panel. Photo taken 08/23/03.
Interstate 275 turns back to the south at the Oldham & Woodland Avenue cloverleaf. Photo taken 08/23/03.
Crossing over Oldham Avenue on Interstate 275 southbound at the Exit 1C off-ramp. Oldham Avenue becomes Woodland Avenue east of the freeway. Three blocks eastward Woodland intersects Central Street. Central Street ties into Interstate 275 at Exit 2 to the north. Photo taken 08/23/03.
With the Knoxville Sunsphere drawing into view, Interstate 275 enters its final mile ahead of the Exit 1B/A Baxter Avenue cloverleaf interchange. Exit 1B serves Knoxville College via Mississippi Avenue. Several streets to the west of Interstate 275 carry state names. This interchange, like that of Exits 1D/C, was converted into a partial-cloverleaf interchange during 2006-07. All of the loop ramps from Interstate 275 were eliminated. Loop ramps to Interstate 275 remain however. Photo taken 08/23/03.
Interstate 275 southbound at the Baxter Avenue overpass and former Exit 1A. The north-south freeway defaults onto ramps to U.S. 441 (Henley Street) near Downtown Knoxville. Photo taken 08/23/03.
Interstate 275 concludes at the Interstate 40 and U.S. 441 connector stack interchange. Downtown Knoxville resides just one mile to the southeast via Henley Street. Interstate 40 westbound intersects the north end of U.S. 129 one mile to the west and Interstate 75 two miles to the west. Photo taken 08/23/03.
