Interstate 40 heads a short distance east (south) to U.S. 117 at Murraysville on the outskirts of Wilmington. There is no direct access from Interstate 140 & U.S. 17 to U.S. 117. U.S. 17 south merges with U.S. 421 south west to return to its original route. When Interstate 140 is completed around Belville, U.S. 17 will follow the freeway west. Presently the freeway ends after the river crossing at junction U.S. 421. U.S. 421 begins south of Carolina Beach on the coast and travels north through Wilmington to a merge with U.S. 76 across the Cape Fear River. Outside of the Wilmington area, U.S. 421 travels a rural route northwest to Wards Corner and eventually Clinton. Photo taken 11/11/06. Wilmington is home to a number of attractions including the USS North Carolina Battleship Memorial (via U.S. 17 & 421 south), Fort Fisher and its North Carolina Aquarium (also via U.S. 421 south), in addition to the State Port (via U.S. 117). North Carolina 133 briefly ties in with U.S. 74 from Martin Luther King Parkway before continuing south to Southport and Oak Island. U.S. 74 & 76 join the fray through to the LeLand area as well.
