Interstate 110 & Mississippi 15 South

Interstate 110 & Mississippi 15 south
Mississippi 15 transitions into the Interstate 110 freeway south of the signalized intersection with Sangania Boulevard. A full-cloverleaf interchange joins the fledgling freeway with Interstate 10 in north D'Iberville. Exit 4B serves interests to Interstate 10 west for Gulfport, Bay St. Louis. Slidell, and New Orleans. Photo taken 06/10/06.
The first sign of Interstate 110 southbound appears at the Exit 4A loop ramp onto Interstate 10 east. Interstate 10 heads four miles to junction Mississippi 609 at Ocean Bridges on its journey to Pascagoula and Mobile, Alabama. Since the U.S. 90 bridge over Biloxi Bay was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, motorists destined to Ocean Springs or Gautier from Biloxi must use Interstate 110 north to Interstate 10 east. Photo taken 06/10/06.
Big Ridge Road passes over Interstate 110 & Mississippi 15 southbound as they depart the interchange with Interstate 10. Exit 2 lies ahead with Auto Mall Parkway north and Rodriguez Street east to Central Avenue. The diamond interchange serves the heart of D'Iberville. Photo taken 06/10/06.
Boney Avenue acts as a southbound frontage road between D'Iberville Boulevard and Auto Mall Parkway. Posted along this stretch is the only set of Interstate 110 & Mississippi 15 reassurance shields. Photo taken 06/10/06.
Exit 2 departs Interstate 110 & Mississippi 15 southbound for Auto Mall Parkway north and Rodriguez Street east. Auto Mall Parkway provides access to Brodie Road west to North Biloxi. Rodriguez Street ends nearby at Gorenflo Road. Photo taken 06/10/06.
A pair of signs advise southbound motorists of the impending end of Interstate 110 at junction U.S. 90 (Exits 1A/B) at Exit 2. Photo taken 06/10/06.
Interstate 110 & Mississippi 15 enter the city of Biloxi about one quarter of the way over the Walter L. Nixon Memorial Bridge over the Back Bay of Biloxi. The final three off-ramps all serve the city. Photo taken 06/10/06.

Interstate 110 encounters the half-diamond interchange with Bayview Avenue (Exit 1D) at the south end of the Back Bay of Biloxi Bridge. The bridge includes a draw span for large vessels below. Photo taken 06/10/06.
A look at the mast-arm supported traffic lights ahead of the Interstate 110 & Mississippi 15 draw span. Other drawbridges within the Interstate system include Interstate 64 in Chesapeake, Virginia; Interstate 95/495 on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge between Maryland and Virginia; Interstate 280 in Toledo, Ohio; and Interstate 264 in Norfolk, Virginia. Photo taken 06/10/06.
Two hotel/casino high rises lie along the southern horizon as Interstate 110 & Mississippi 15 cross the Back Bay of Biloxi draw span. The bridge includes a pedestrian walkway to link Biloxi with D'Iberville on the northbound side. Photo taken 06/10/06.
Drivers descend into north reaches of Biloxi at the Exit 1D ramp departure to Bayview Avenue. Bayview Avenue meanders along the marshy southern shore of the Back Bay of Biloxi between Forest Avenue and Back Bay Boulevard. Photo taken 06/10/06.
Following in quick succession is the Exit 1C half-diamond interchange with Division Street on Interstate 110 & Mississippi 15 south. Division Street travels in an east-west fashion between Keesler Air Force Base near Porter Avenue to Oak Street east of downtown. Photo taken 06/10/06.
A new Interstate 110 ends sign replaced the previous version that was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Photo taken 06/10/06.
Interstate 110 & Mississippi 15 make their final approach to junction U.S. 90 (Exits 1A/B). U.S. 90, known as Beach Boulevard, straddles the Gulf of Mexico shores from Biloxi Bay west to Gulfport, Long Beach, Pass Christian, and St. Louis Bay. Much of the road was destroyed from the storm surge of Hurricane Katrina, and the spans linking Biloxi with Ocean Springs to the east and Bay St. Louis from Henderson Point to the west were damaged beyond repair. The road is open again with the exceptions of the two bay bridges, and as such, plans to replace both spans are underway. Photo taken 06/10/06.
Auxiliary overheads direct motorists toward Keesler A.F.B. and downtown Biloxi near the Exit 1A/B trumpet interchange with U.S. 90 (Beach Boulevard). The casino district of Biloxi lies to the east of Interstate 110 & Mississippi 15 along Beach Boulevard. Keesler A.F.B, home to the Air Force Reserve's 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron's "Hurricane Hunters" unit, encompasses land between Irish Hill Drive and the Back Bay of Biloxi to the west of Forest Avenue within Biloxi. Photo taken 06/10/06.
The Interstate 110 & Mississippi 15 southbound mainline default onto U.S. 90 (Beach Boulevard) west to Keesler A.F.B. and Gulfport. The right-hand lane departs for the elevated loop ramp onto U.S. 90 (Beach Boulevard) east for downtown. The interchange between the two highways is partially elevated over the Gulf of Mexico. The viaducts all weathered the fury of Katrina and were reopened shortly after the August 29, 2005 landfall. Photo taken 07/03/04.
The signs of the Exit 1A/B ramp split however did not survive the strong winds of Hurricane Katrina. Pictured here are the replacements, including Keesler A.F.B. in place of Gulfport for Exit 1B. The Exit 1A overhead should temporarily not read Ocean Springs as it may be well into 2007 or 2008 before the Biloxi Bay Bridge is replaced for U.S. 90. Photo taken 06/10/06.
Sinking toward the merge onto U.S. 90 (Beach Boulevard) west from Interstate 110 & Mississippi 15 south. Elevated ramps serve interests to and from U.S. 90 east. In the background is a casino high rise and parking garage situated along the beach. Photo taken 06/10/06.
A pair of large warning signs coupled with flashing yellow lights advise motorists of the ramp sharpness ahead of their respective merges onto Beach Boulevard. Asides the casinos and associated buildings, much of the landscape along U.S. 90 through Biloxi was devastated beyond belief. It will be quite some time before a sense of normalcy returns.
