Interstate 110 Northbound

The Guide to Interstate 110 is split into two pages:

Northbound
Interstate 10 takes an abrupt turn from the south to the west at Exit 155B/C for Interstate 110. Therefore, as Interstate 10 makes its curve to the west, Interstate 110 northbound continues the northerly trajectory towards downtown. This Exit 1A overhead for the Louisiana 73/Government Street exit is situated just past the split with Interstate 10. There is no access for this ramp from the eastbound ramp for Interstate 110, as the ramp will have yet to complete its turn to the north in time. Photo taken 08/12/02. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Exit 1A for Louisiana 73/Government Street quickly departs Interstate 110 north from Interstate 10 west while the Interstate 10 eastbound ramp is still in the process of merging (visible to the left). The Baton Rouge Centroplex is located at the intersection of Front and Government Streets downtown. Louisiana 73 snakes its way eastward along Government Street before ending up on the Jefferson Highway at Interstate 12. Photo taken 08/12/02. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Traffic merging from Interstate 10 east onto Interstate 110 must quickly navigate between taking Exit 1B for Convention Street or merging to the right for northbound. The Business District ramp (Exit 1B) is one of three left-hand departures for the northbound viaduct (the others being Exit 1C and 1D). Photo taken 08/12/02.
Interstate 110 northbound at Exit 1B for Convention Street. There is no direct access to Convention or Florida Streets from southbound. Instead downtown traffic must utilize the Main Street off-ramp (Exit 1H). Photo taken 08/12/02.
Exit 1C leaves one block north of Exit 1B and links Interstate 110 with the paired Business U.S. 61/190 (Florida Boulevard) into downtown. Florida Boulevard ends at the Mississippi Waterfront adjacent to the Louisiana Arts and Science Center. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Advance guide signage for the third left-hand exit in a row on Interstate 110 northbound for Exit 1D/North Street. Visible to the left is the needle like high-rise for the Louisiana State Capital. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Shifting just two blocks northward from the Florida Street off-ramp is Exit 1D for North Street. Interstate 110 begins to make its easterly turn beyond this interchange. Exit 1E is situated along the curved portion of the freeway. Photo taken 08/12/02.

Traffic merging onto Interstate 110 northbound from North Street enters the freeway as the exit-only lane for Exit 1E (Capital Access Road). Interstate 110 descends from its viaduct between North Avenue and Boyd Avenue ahead. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Due to the narrow nature of Interstate 110 on the curved portion speed limits are maintained at 50 MPH. Exit 1E departs in this northbound scene for Capital Access Road at the Boyd Avenue overpass. As the name suggests, Capital Access Road links Interstate 110 with the Louisiana State Capital Complex between 3rd and 5th Streets. Photo taken 08/12/02.
The ramp for Exit 1E dumps traffic onto a frontage road. This sign bridge is posted above the frontage road midway between the Exit 1E off and on-ramps. In the background can be seen Interstate 110 continuing its curvature. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Exit 1F/Fuqua Street guide signage on Interstate 110 northbound. The railroad overpass is part of one of the many railroad lines that serve the sprawling industrial and port complexes along the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge metro. More government offices are situated from Exit 1F. Photo taken 08/12/02. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Interstate 110 is orientated in an east-west fashion for a brief spell between Exits 1E and 2A. This northbound photograph shows Exit 1F for Fuqua Street. Exit 2A/Scenic Highway continues the closely spaced off-ramp theme for Interstate 110 and is in place just one-quarter mile ahead. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Approaching Exit 2A for Scenic Highway on Interstate 110. The freeway starts to again curve back to a northerly direction, paralleling Scenic Highway and North 22nd Streets. Note the gothic style visible in the railroad overpass at Exit 1E is also prevalent in this North 19th Street overpass. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Passing underneath 21st Street is the Exit 2A/Scenic Highway loop-ramp of Interstate 110 north. Scenic Highway becomes Business U.S. 61 & 190 north one mile to the north at the intersection of Chippewa Street. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Interstate 110 again elevates onto a six-lane viaduct as it approaches Exit 3A/Chippewa Street. The viaduct has undergone some structural deficiencies in its aging. Motorists will notice frequent subtle undulations as they travel northbound. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Exit 3A/Chippewa Street departs Interstate 110 northbound in this photograph. Chippewa Street loops westward towards the Mississippi Riverfront into downtown via Front Street. The surface street carries Business U.S. 61 & 190 from the intersection of Scenic Highway westward to 3rd Street. To the east Chippewa Street enters an impoverished residential area. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Interstate 110 northbound on-ramp at the Chippewa Street (Exit 3A) interchange. The freeway viaduct is flanked on both sides by the surface streets Hiawatha Street (northbound) and Pocahontas Street (southbound). Photo taken 08/12/02.
Interstate 110 viaduct northbound approaching Exit 3B for Mohican and Wyandotte Streets. A fourth auxiliary lane is formed by the merging on-ramp from Chippewa Street. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Exits 3A through 4B serve working-class neighborhoods of Baton Rouge. This photograph shows Exit 3B departing Interstate 110 northbound, with advance guide signage for Exit 4A/Evangeline Street. Wyandotte Street parallels Mohican Street two blocks from one another in an east-west fashion. Photo taken 08/12/02.
The substandardness continues on Interstate 110, as no right-hand shoulder is present between Exits 3B and 4A. Again a fourth exit-only lane emerges between the two ramps. The freeway curves northeasterly over Dayton Street. Photo taken 08/12/02.
A full diamond interchange exists for Exit 4A (Evangeline Street). Evangeline Street travels east from U.S. 61 & 190 Business (Scenic Highway) to Louisiana 67 (Plank Road) and U.S. 61 & 190 (Airline Highway). Photo taken 08/12/02.
A centerline posted upcoming exits sign comes into play on Interstate 110 northbound after Exit 4A. Note that U.S. 61 and 190 are omitted from the Airline Highway entry on the overhead panel. Speed limits are maintained at 50 mph through this stretch. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Seven blocks to the north of Evangeline Street is Hollywood Street. Exit 4A return traffic merges onto the viaduct to become the exit-only lane for Exit 4B (Hollywood Street). Photo taken 08/12/02.
The last urban exit on Interstate 110 northbound is at Exit 4B/Hollywood Street. Hollywood Street travels between Scenic Highway (U.S. 61B & 190B) and Greenwell Street at the Airline Highway (U.S. 61 & 190). There is no return ramp to Interstate 110 northbound from Exit 4B. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Descending toward ground level on the Interstate 110 viaduct northbound 0.25 miles south of Exit 5 (Airline Highway). The upcoming four-level stack interchange allows fluid traffic movements between the freeway and Airline Highway (U.S. 61 & 190), giving traffic bound for the industrial and port facilities along the Mississippi River easy access. Photo taken 08/12/02.
The ramps for U.S. 61 & 190 depart from northbound Interstate 110 in this photograph. The only control city displayed is that of Opelousas (pop. 22,860) for U.S. 190 west. U.S. 190 becomes the Acadiana Trail on the 58 mile journey to Opelousas and junction Interstate 49. The name Airline Highway applies to U.S. 190 from the Mississippi River Bridge eastward to U.S. 61. U.S. 61 continues the naming convention southeastward into the city of New Orleans. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Ascending high above Interstate 110 below, the Exit 5 off-ramp partitions into U.S. 61 & 190 (Airline Highway) west and east. The Airline Highway follows a two-mile freeway with interchanges at Scenic Highway (U.S. 61B & 190B) and Plank Road (Louisiana 67) within the vicinity of Interstate 110. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Traffic continuing northward towards the Metro Airport and Natchez, Mississippi past the Airline Highway exit sees this sign bridge for Exit 6/Louisiana 408. Although not mentioned here, Louisiana 408 (Harding Boulevard) directly serves the Baker and Scotlandville communities of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Interstate 110 composes the second level of the Exit 5 symmetrical stack interchange with the Airline Highway. This northbound photograph takes a look at the flyovers within the center of the sprawling interchange. A second symmetrical stack interchange exists in the Pelican State at the confluence of Interstate 49 and Louisiana 3132 on the south-side of Shreveport. Photo taken 08/12/02.
This photograph looks backwards from Interstate 110 northbound within the Exit 5 symmetrical stack interchange. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Just north of the Airline Highway symmetrical stack interchange is the Exit 6 off-ramp for Louisiana 408 (Harding Boulevard). A braided ramp exists between Interstate 110 and Harding Boulevard and the northbound on-ramp from the Airline Highway. The overcrossing pictured here carries 72nd Avenue. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Shifting to the Airline Highway (U.S. 61 & 190) on-ramp to Interstate 110 northbound. The two lane roadway allows access to both Interstate 110 northbound and Louisiana 408 (Harding Boulevard). The Harding Boulevard off-ramp splits from the roadway beyond the 72nd Avenue overpass ahead. Photo taken 08/12/02.
The Airline Highway on-ramp partitions into Interstate 110 northbound and Louisiana 408 (Harding Boulevard). Louisiana 408 composes a 13.04-mile highway from Southern University one mile west of U.S. 61 to Louisiana 37 at Greenwell Springs. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Traffic from Exit 6 and the Airline Highway merges and nears Louisiana 408 (Harding Boulevard). The east-west highway intersects U.S. 61 (Scenic Highway) and Louisiana 67 (Plank Road) within a mile of the freeway. Veterans Memorial Boulevard carries traffic northward to Baton Rouge Metro Airport. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Interstate 110 again ascends onto a six lane viaduct between Harding Boulevard and Central Road. The bridge elevates over the city street grid of north Baton Rouge. Pictured here is the 0.75-mile overhead for Exit 8 (Louisiana 19). Photo taken 08/12/02.
Descending from the northernmost viaduct of Interstate 110 over Central Avenue at the 0.25-mile sign bridge of Exit 8. Note that the sign bridge is also painted peach similarly to the chain link fence of the elevated freeway. The only other instance of peach painted highway infrastructure that we have come across are sign bridges of Interstate 384. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Interstate 110 northbound at the Exit 8 half-diamond interchange with Louisiana 19 (Scotland Avenue). The immediate vicinity of the junction is home to the Scotlandville and Baker communities of the north Baton Rouge metropolitan area. Louisiana 19 otherwise exists between U.S. 61 and the Mississippi state line for a distance of 34.02 miles. North of the city the state highway travels to the suburbs of Zachary and Slaughter. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Traffic thins out dramatically north of the U.S. 61 & 190 (Airline Highway) junction to the northern terminus (Exit 8). Traffic counts decrease from 64,507 vehicles per day (vpd) on the stretch between Exits 4B and 5 to 22,258 vpd here. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Interstate 110 ends advisory sign posted within the median 0.25 miles south of the terminus. The junction ahead with U.S. 61 (Scenic Highway) sees one lane allocated for north and southbound. Interstate 110 ends at the Scotlandville neighborhood of Baton Rouge. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Split of Exits 8A and 8B at the northern conclusion of Interstate 110. U.S. 61 southbound (Exit 8A) serves the Scotlandville and Southern University areas of north Baton Rouge. Exit 8B carries Interstate 110 traffic onto U.S. 61 northbound toward Natchez. The historic Mississippi River city resides 82 miles to the north. Photo taken 08/12/02.
Transitioning from Interstate 110 northbound onto U.S. 61 northbound (Scenic Highway). The arch pedestrian overcrossing is one of several in the north Baton Rouge vicinity. Northern suburbs and industrial areas of Baton Rouge metro await motorists on U.S. 61. The federal highway continues from here 25 miles northwest to Saint Francisville (pop. 1,712) otherwise. Photo taken 08/12/02.
