North (Duval / Nassau Counties)

Interstate 95 connects the eastern shore of Florida, linking Jacksonville in the north with Miami in the south, with St. Augustine, Daytona Beach, the Space Coast near Titusville, Melbourne, Fort Pierce, West Palm Beach, and Fort Lauderdale along the way. Travelers may opt for the slower and more scenic U.S. 1 or Florida A1A for the entire route between Jacksonville and Miami, although there are route breaks in Florida A1A in certain areas.

The first Duval County interchange of Interstate 95 joins the freeway with Saint Augustine Road near the communities of Bayard and Loretto. St. Augustine Road travels west from U.S. 1 (Phillips Highway) to junction Interstate 295 and Florida 13 (San Jose Boulevard) at Goodbys. Photo taken 08/26/04.
Nearing the Exit 335 off-ramp to St. Augustine Road and the junction with Interstate 295 (Exit 337) at Greenland. Construction is presently underway to rebuilt the Interstate 95 & 295 junction to accommodate the expansion of the Jacksonville Beltway to the east. Therefore the diagrammatical overhead for Exit 337 is temporarily covered due to the upcoming roadwork. Photo taken 08/26/04.
Traffic to Exit 335 (St. Augustine Road) departs Interstate 95 northbound. St. Augustine Road ends at U.S. 1 (Phillips Highway) 1.4 miles to the east. Four miles to the west is the intersection with Greenland & Loretto Roads at the Loretto neighborhood of south Jacksonville. Photo taken 08/26/04.

What is normally the 0.50-mile diagrammatical overhead for the junction with Interstate 295 (Exit 337) on Interstate 95 northbound. A $105 million project is presently underway to redesign and add ramps between the two freeways in south Jacksonville. Slated for completion by April of 2006, contractors are aiming for a July 2005 opening date to receive up to $2 million in bonuses.1 The project is part of the Jacksonville Beltway project that will complete Florida 9A's loop east of Interstate 95. Photo taken 08/26/04.
Exit 337 traffic must continue north to junction U.S. 1 (Exit 339) to turn around and use the southbound Interstate 95 ramp onto Interstate 295 north for the Buckman Bridge and Orange Park. The folded-diamond interchange with U.S. 1 lies just 1.50 miles ahead. Photo taken 08/26/04.
Exit 337A leaves Interstate 95 northbound for Florida 9A (Future Interstate 295) northbound for access to the Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach, and Neptune Beach via connections with Florida 202, U.S. 90, or Florida 10. Florida 9A will be resigned as Interstate 295 upon completion of the Jacksonville Beltway in east Jacksonville. Photo taken 08/26/04.
U.S. 1 (Phillips Highway) crosses paths with Interstate 95 at Exit 339. The federal highway parallels Interstate 95 to the east between Exit 339 and Exit 298 through St. Augustine. U.S. 1 travels west of Interstate 95 along the Phillips Highway between Greenland and the South Jacksonville neighborhoods of the city. Photo taken 08/26/04.

The 0.50-mile overhead describes the connections to the Main Street Bridge (U.S. 1 & 90) and Acosta Bridge (Florida 13). Although not mentioned, U.S. 1 north & 90 west merge onto the northbound carriageway of Interstate 95 from Atlantic Boulevard. A partial "Y" interchange brings the pair onto the freeway at Exit 349. Photo taken 08/26/04.
Interstate 95 & U.S. 1 north & U.S. 90 west expand to six lanes in anticipation of the Exit 350A partition south of downtown Jacksonville. Exit 351A carries northbound drivers onto Peninsular Place west below Interstate 95. Peninsular Place intersects Park Drive a block and a half west of the ramp merge. Interstate 95 otherwise prepares to enter its compact interchange with the eastern terminus of Interstate 10 (Exit 351B). The 1950s interchange that features left-hand ramps will undergo reconstruction starting in February of 2005. Touted as the "Big Interchange" or the "Big I" for short by the Florida Department of Transportation, the $206 million project will take six years to complete and involve 17 separate bridges.2 Photo taken 08/26/04.
Interstate 95 northbound narrows to two through lanes at the Interstate 10 eastern terminus (Exit 351B). Additionally the left-hand lane leaves the freeway for the westbound beginning of Interstate 10. The Big I construction project addresses the bottleneck and left-hand off-ramp by separating traffic between local and through interests. A new flyover will rise above Interstate 95 to join Interstate 10 westbound from the right ahead of the existing connection. Additionally a new downtown ramp via Forest Street will aid local interests.2 Photo taken 08/26/04.
The westbound beginning of Interstate 10 leaves Interstate 95 north for Lake City, Tallahassee, Pensacola, and ultimately Santa Monica, California. An existing portion of the future flyover ramp of Exit 351B exists to the right. Interstate 10 straddles the Gulf of Mexico coastline between the Big Bend of Florida and Houston, Texas. The freeway then begins a slow ascent from San Antonio to El Paso in West Texas. Other major cities along the Interstate 10 corridor include Mobile, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Phoenix, San Bernardino, and Los Angeles. Photo taken 07/22/04.
Interstate 95 expands back to six lanes as it leaves the Interstate 10 eastern terminal for Myrtle Avenue (Exit 352A). The next 1.50 miles of the freeway include numerous on and off-ramps dating from 1950s era design. Departing first is Exit 352A onto McCoys Creek Boulevard east for Myrtle Avenue. In conjunction with the Big I project, Exit 352A closes during the Spring of 2005.2 Photo taken 08/26/04.
