After the Interstate 395/Florida 836 interchange, the next exit is Exit 4B, Junction Interstate 195/Julia Tuttle Causeway east and Florida 112/Airport Expressway west. Photo taken 12/18/03.
This mileage sign provides the distance to Fort Lauderdale (via Interstate 95) and Orlando (via Florida's Turnpike). Note the use of the abbreviation "mi" after the mileage figures and the arrow indicating that motorists should stay on Interstate 95 north. This kind of sign helps out of town motorists. Photo taken 12/18/03.
The three left lanes continue north along Interstate 95, while the two right lanes exit only to Interstate 195 east to Miami Beach via the Julia Tuttle Causeway. The number three lane becomes the exit to Toll Florida 112 west to Miami International Airport. Like Toll Florida 836/Dolphin Expressway, Toll Florida 112/Airport Expressway has a toll assessed only in the eastbound direction, so westbound traffic toward the airport do not pay the toll. Photo taken 12/18/03.
Northbound Interstate 95 reaches Exit 4B, Junction Interstate 195 east to Miami Beach and Florida 112 west to the Miami International Airport. Both routes are spur freeways that do not connect to other parts of the Miami freeway system. (There are plans to construct a freeway roughly along the Florida 953/LeJeune Road corridor, which would connect to the western end of Florida 112, but for now, all freeway traffic must use local streets to reach Florida 836, Florida 826, or Interstate 75). Interstate 195, of course, ends at the intersection with Florida 907A upon reaching the barrier island of Miami Beach. Photo taken 12/18/03.
Now on the three-lane transition ramp from northbound Interstate 95 to Interstate 195 east and Florida 112 west, the ramp splits into two sets of two-lane ramps. Both Florida 112 with its airport destination and Interstate 195 with its Miami Beach destination are very popular with tourists, and they carry a good amount of traffic. Photo taken 12/18/03.
Returning to the mainline of northbound Interstate 95, the next exit is Exit 6A, NW 62nd Street/Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard. After the Interstate 195/Toll Florida 112 interchange, a high occupancy vehicle lane emerges in the left lane, and three multi-purpose lanes expand to four, with an additional exit only lane for Exit 6A. This kind of configuration continues from Interstate 195 north to the Golden Glades Interchange (Junction U.S. 441/Florida 7, Florida 826/Palmetto Expressway/NE 167th Street (Miami Beach Boulevard), and Florida 91/Florida's Turnpike). Photo taken 12/18/03.
Exit 6A serves Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard/NW 62nd Street, which is a major east-west arterial route that traverses Liberty City to the west and skirts Little Haiti before reaching U.S. 1/Florida 5/Biscayne Boulevard near Eaton Park. Photo taken 12/18/03.
A large, somewhat oversized variable message sign offers traffic and weather information just prior to Exit 6A along northbound. It seems like every state/metropolitan area has its own style for variable message signs. Photo taken 12/18/03.
Northbound Interstate 95 reaches Exit 6A, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Boulevard/NW 62nd Street. Note the change in pavement markings for the high occupancy vehicle lane (a double, broken, white line). Photo taken 12/18/03.
The next three exits along northbound Interstate 95 are Exit 7, Junction Florida 934/NW 79th Street and NW 81st/82nd Street one-way couplet. The following two exits are Exit 8A, NW 95th Street and Exit 8B, Junction Florida 932/NW 103rd Street. Photo taken 12/18/03.
A spot of sunshine brings light to Interstate 95 on a partly cloudy afternoon in Miami in December. Photo taken 12/18/03.
Florida 934 rides the northern city limits of Miami between Interstate 95 and Miami Avenue. The immediate area north of Florida 934 is not incorporated. Florida 934 is a major arterial that extends east, skirting Little Haiti and continuing past U.S. 1/Biscayne Boulevard en route to the Kennedy Causeway. The Causeway carries the highway over Biscayne Bay, through North Bay Village (North Bay and Treasure Islands), and terminating at Florida A1A in Miami Beach. Heading west, Florida 934 crosses into Hialeah, ultimately connecting to Florida 826/Palmetto Expressway just south of the Florida 826/U.S. 27 interchange. Photo taken 12/18/03.
Again, the next three exits along northbound Interstate 95 are Exit 7, Junction Florida 934/NW 79th Street and NW 81st/82nd Street; Exit 8A, NW 95th Street; and Exit 8B, Junction Florida 932/NW 103rd Street. Photo taken 12/18/03.
The right lane becomes exit only for Exit 7, Junction Florida 934/NW 79th Street and NW 81st/82nd Street. The next three exits are Exit 8A, NW 95th Street; Exit 8B, Junction Florida 932/NW 103rd Street; and Exit 9, Junction Florida 924/Gratigny Parkway/NW 119th Street. Five lanes (four through and one HOV) continue north along Interstate 95. Photo taken 12/18/03.
A secondary mileage sign advises motorists destined for Fort Lauderdale in Broward County and distant Orlando to continue north on Interstate 95. Photo taken 12/18/03.
The next three exits are Exit 8A, NW 95th Street; Exit 8B, Junction Florida 932/NW 103rd Street; and Exit 9, Junction Florida 924/NW 119th Street. Photo taken 12/18/03.
NW 95th Street is also known as the Rev. Dr. A. Jackson Jr. Boulevard. The street heads east to Miami Shores, where it connects to Florida 909/NE 2nd Avenue, Florida 915/NE 6th Avenue, and U.S. 1/Biscayne Boulevard. The next exit is Exit 8B, Junction Florida 932/NW 103rd Street. Photo taken 12/18/03.
The next three exits are Exit 8B, Junction Florida 932/NW 103rd Street; Exit 9, Junction Florida 924/NW 119th Street; and Exit 10A, Junction Florida 922/NW 125th Street. Signed state routes become more prevalent on local streets as Interstate 95 passes through the unincorporated yet well-developed areas of Miami-Dade County. Photo taken 12/18/03.
Northbound Interstate 95 reaches Exit 8B, Junction Florida 932/NW 103rd Street. Florida 932 heads east to terminate at Florida 915/NE 6th Avenue near Miami Shores Country Club and west to Hialeah. The state route ends at Florida 826/Palmetto Expressway near Westland Mall. The next exit is Exit 9, Junction Florida 924/Gratigny Parkway/NW 119th Street. Photo taken 12/18/03.
The next three exits are Exit 9, Junction Florida 924/NW 119th Street; Exit 10A, Junction Florida 922/NW 125th Street; and Exit 10B, Junction Florida 916/NW 135th Street/Opa-Locka Boulevard. Photo taken 12/18/03.
Northbound Interstate 95 reaches Exit 9, Junction Florida 924/NW 119th Street. Use Florida 924/NW 119th Street east to Florida 909/Dixie Highway in North Miami and west to the Gratigny Parkway, a toll facility that begins at NW 32nd Avenue and continues as a controlled access highway until reaching the massive Interstate 75/Florida 826 interchange in Hialeah. Despite the fact that this route appears as a logical extension to Interstate 75, there were never any plans for the Gratigny Parkway to become an Interstate highway. If anything, Interstate 75 would have gone southeast to meet Interstate 95 in Miami, which is a very unlikely scenario. Photo taken 12/18/03.
The next three exits are Exit 10A, Junction Florida 922/NW 125th Street; Exit 10B, Junction Florida 916/NW 135th Street/Opa-Locka Boulevard; and Exit 11A, NW 151st Street. Photo taken 12/18/03.
Northbound Interstate 95 reaches Exit 10A, Junction Florida 922/NW 125th Street; the next exit is Exit 10B, Junction Florida 916/NW 135th Street/Opa-Locka Boulevard. Florida 922 extends to the east along NW 125th Street through North Miami before crossing the toll Broad Causeway into Bay Harbour Islands and Bal Harbour, where it ends at Florida A1A. Photo taken 12/18/03.
The next exit along northbound is Exit 10B, Junction Florida 916/NW 135th Street/Opa-Locka Boulevard. Florida 916 extends west to Opa-Locka, ending at Florida 823/NW 57th Avenue near Opa-Locka Airport and in the shadow of Toll Florida 924/Gratigny Parkway. To the east, Florida 916 follows NW 135th Street en route to Florida 909/Dixie Highway and U.S. 1/Florida 5/Biscayne Boulevard in North Miami. Photo taken 12/18/03.
Northbound Interstate 95 reaches Exit 10B, Junction Florida 916/NW 135th Street east and Florida 916/Opa-Locka Boulevard west. The next exit is Exit 11, 151st Street, one mile. Photo taken 12/18/03.
A newer mileage sign is posted above the sound wall, providing the distance to Fort Lauderdale (15 miles) and Orlando (217 miles). This mileage sign advises motorists to use Interstate 95 north to Fort Lauderdale and Florida's Turnpike to Orlando. Photo taken 12/18/03.
Prior to the 151st Street interchange, Interstate 95 prepares for the Golden Glades Interchange, and this is the first sign for the coming freeway confluence. The Golden Glades is where Interstate 95 enters a massive tangle of ramps and flyovers that connect the main north-south freeway with Florida 826/Palmetto Expressway west, Florida 826/NW 167th Street east, Florida 91/Florida's Turnpike north to Orlando, and U.S. 441/Florida 7/NW Second Avenue north. Photo taken 12/18/03.
The next set of signs advises of the major changes for through traffic on Interstate 95. All through high occupancy vehicles for Interstate 95 should remain in the left lane to avoid most of the traffic weaving through the Golden Glades Interchange. Otherwise, the two left lanes exit to Florida 826 west and Florida's Turnpike north. The right three lanes continue north as the main lanes for Interstate 95. Photo taken 12/18/03.
Northbound Interstate 95 reaches Exit 11, 151st Street east to North Miami Beach and west to Florida 9/Unity Boulevard. Photo taken 12/18/03.
The next series of exits along northbound Interstate 95 serve the Golden Glades Interchange: Exit 12A, Junction Florida 91/Florida's Turnpike north and Florida 826 west; Exit 12B, Junction Florida 826 east; and Exit 12C, Junction U.S. 441/Florida 7 north. Photo taken 12/18/03.
The left lane is for high occupancy vehicles, the number 2 lane is for the turnpike, the number 3 lane is for Florida 826 west, and the number 3, 4, and 5 lanes (three right lanes) are for through traffic on Interstate 95 and to Exit 12B, Junction Florida 826 east. This interchange marks the northern terminus of the southern section of Florida 9A, which is silently merged with Interstate 95 for its first 13 miles. North of Golden Glades, Interstate 95 is silently merged with Florida 9 all the way to the Georgia State Line. A northern section of Florida 9A exists as the eastern half of the future Interstate 295 Jacksonville Beltway. Photo taken 12/18/03.
The high occupancy vehicle lane separates from the mainline first upon entering the Golden Glades interchange. The HOV lane will split into a through lane for northbound Interstate 95 as well as a ramp into a park and ride. This interchange is also the main connection from Interstate 95 to U.S. 441/Florida 7, which is featured on the State Road 7/U.S. 441 Collaborative Web Page. In October of 2003, the collaborative group began work on the development of a Strategic Master Plan for the entire 25.6-mile corridor. Photo taken 12/18/03.
Back on the mainline, the second left exit after the HOV separation is Exit 12A, Junction Florida 826 West and Florida's Turnpike north. Use Florida 826/Palmetto Expressway west to reach Interstate 75 and to follow the freeway south to Pinecrest at its terminus with U.S. 1/Dixie Highway. Florida's Turnpike follows secret Florida 91 north parallel to Interstate 95 through South Florida, then turns inland to serve greater Orlando and Orange County. The Turnpike rejoins Interstate 75 at Wildwood near Ocala. In this picture, the transition ramp for both routes prepares to pass under the HOV flyover ramp. Photo taken 12/18/03.
The left two lanes of the transition ramp from Interstate 95 are earmarked for northbound Florida's Turnpike, while the right lane offers a ramp connecting to westbound Florida 826/Palmetto Expressway. Photo taken 12/18/03.
This series of pictures follows the Interstate 95 high occupancy vehicle lane as it passes high above the Golden Glades Interchange. There are no exits from this lane until Exit 18, Ives Dairy Road. Photo taken 12/18/03.
After descending back to ground level, the high occupancy lane resumes its place as the left lane for the mainline freeway. Photo taken 12/18/03.
Returning to the mainline, Interstate 95 north meets the ramp for Exit 12B, Junction Florida 826 east to Oleta River State Recreation Area, North Miami Beach, and Florida A1A in Sunny Isles Beach. The next ramp is for Exit 12C, Junction U.S. 441/Florida 7 north to Norland. This picture shows the first mileage sign after the Golden Glades Interchange, which lists the next three exits: Exit 14, Junction Florida 860/Miami Gardens Road; Exit 16, Junction Florida 854, Ives Dairy Road; and Exit 18, Junction Florida 858/Hallandale Beach Boulevard. Photo taken 12/18/03.
Northbound Interstate 95 reaches Exit 14, Junction Florida 860/Miami Gardens Road. Florida 860 extends east to Ojus, where the route ends at U.S. 1. To the west, Florida 860 extends to a trumpet interchange with Interstate 75 that was opened in 1986. Photo taken 12/18/03.
Now that the Orlando traffic has (presumably) left via the turnpike, the guide signs point toward Fort Lauderdale, this time without any mileage. Photo taken 12/18/03.
A table-sized Interstate 95 shield is seen after the Miami Gardens Road interchange. Photo taken 12/18/03.
The next three exits along northbound are Exit 16, Junction Florida 854, Ives Dairy Road; Exit 18, Junction Florida 858/Hallandale Beach Boulevard; and Exit 19, Junction Florida 824/Pembroke Road. Photo taken 12/18/03.
The Florida 854 shield was removed from this sign and replaced with NW 203rd Street, which is the same as Ives Dairy Road. Florida 854 extends west through the northern tier of Miami-Dade County, terminating at Florida 823/NW 57th Avenue/Red Road. Photo taken 12/18/03.
Trailblazers such as this one are common on Interstate 95 between the Golden Glades Interchange and Fort Pierce. Despite their proximity and occasional crossover, the turnpike and Interstate 95 do not directly interchange again, so one must use the local connections via state routes and local roads. Photo taken 12/18/03.
Northbound Interstate 95 reaches Exit 16, Junction Florida 854/NW 203rd Street/Ives Dairy Road. This is the final interchange along northbound Interstate 95 in Miami-Dade County. The freeway now enters Broward County. Photo taken 12/18/03.
