Interstate 95 Southbound - I-26 to Georgia

South Carolina 63 provides return access to Walterboro from Interstate 95 southbound. The state highway follows Sniders Highway a short distance to its merge with U.S. 17 Alternate (Hendersonville Highway) on the outskirts of town. U.S. 21 (Lowcountry Highway) travels south from Ruffin 19 miles to meet Interstate 95 at Exit 42. The federal highway continues east of the freeway three miles to its merge with U.S. 17 Alternate (Hendersonville Highway) nearby. Exit 42 constitutes a diamond interchange between Interstate 95 and U.S. 21 (Lowcountry Highway). U.S. 21 joins U.S. 17 north at Pocotaligo for a six-mile drive east to Gardens Corner and their split. South Carolina 68 provides a second access point to Yemassee from Interstate 95 via Exit 38. The state highway begins in Yemassee at U.S. 17 Alternate & 21 and heads west 18 miles to its end at junction U.S. 278 and Almeda. Photo taken 11/13/06.

Interstate 95 next meets U.S. 17 for the first time at the Exit 33 trumpet interchange. U.S. 17 joins the freeway after serving Charleston, Georgetown, Myrtle Beach and the rest of the coastal Lowcountry. The next three interchanges provide access to the resort area of Hilton Head Island. South Carolina 462 south and South Carolina 336 east to South Carolina 462 south lead to U.S. 278 more directly than remaining on Interstate 95 south to U.S. 278 itself. Photo taken 11/13/06.
South Carolina 462 meets Interstate 95 & U.S. 17 near the village of Coosawhatchie. The state highway follows a four-lane roadway west into the community utilizing a short section of four-lane old U.S. 17 in the process. South Carolina 462 travels west from Coosawhatchie 14 miles to junction U.S. 601 at Pineland and 19 miles to its end at junction U.S. 321 at Robertville. Photo taken 11/13/06.
South Carolina 462 intersects Interstate 95 & U.S. 17 at the Exit 28 diamond interchange. The state highway travels north-south between Gillisonville (Junction U.S. 278) and nearby Coosawhatchie southward to South Carolina 170 near Chelsea. The final Ridgeland interchange of Interstate 95 is that of the Exit 18 trumpet interchange with Road 13. Road 13 loops eastward from U.S. 17 & 278 at Switzerland to South Carolina 336 and 462 on a parallel alignment to the north-south freeway. Photo taken 11/13/06.
Exit 18 comprises of a trumpet interchange with a short access road to parallel U.S. 17 & 278. Road 13 ties into the exit from Grahamville to the northeast. U.S. 17 & 278 pass within eyesight of Interstate 95 southbound from Switzerland to Hardeville. Switzerland itself is not much more than a small grouping of buildings. Photo taken 11/13/06.

Interstate 95 southbound at Exit 5 (U.S. 17 & 321), the last interchange within the Palmetto State. A partial cloverleaf interchange provides the movements between the freeway and U.S. 17 (General William Hardee Boulevard) to U.S. 321 . U.S. 321 ends nearby in Hardeville, traveling northward from there to Fairfax (pop. 3,206), Bamberg (pop. 3,733), Gaston (pop. 1,304), and Columbia (pop. 116,278).
