Interstate 95 Southbound - North Carolina to I-20

Interstate 95 South
Interstate 95 serves just one city of significance along its 199-mile trek across the Palmetto State, that of Florence. Four interchanges serve the city of 29,956 from the freeway, with Exit 164 at U.S. 52 being the second. U.S. 52 follows Lucas Street south into Florence, meeting U.S. 76 and 301 (Palmetto Street) in downtown. U.S. 52 provides a four-lane highway between Florence and Darlington to the north otherwise. Photo taken 06/25/05.
The parallel CSX Railroad line of U.S. 52 necessitates a folded-diamond interchange with Interstate 95 at Exit 164. U.S. 52 and the railroad line head north six miles to Darlington and junction U.S. 401. U.S. 52 serves interests to Darlington International Raceway and Florence-Darlington Technical College. The federal highway overall travels between Charleston and Cheraw in South Carolina. Photo taken 06/25/05.
An April 2004 widening project saw completion along a ten-mile stretch of Interstate 95 in the Florence area. The six-lane segment includes a left-lane restriction for all trucks. Pictured here is the one-mile overhead for Exit 160B to Interstate 20 west. The right-hand lane defaults onto Interstate 20 west as Interstate 95 again reduces to four overall lanes. Photo taken 06/25/05.
One half mile north of the Exit 160B/A directional-cloverleaf interchange with Interstate 20 west and Business Spur Interstate 20 east (incorrectly shown as Interstate 20 east on the Exit 160A panel). Interstate 20 overall serves Columbia between Augusta, Georgia, Aiken, and Florence. The freeway ends as Business Spur Interstate 20 east of Interstate 95, a 1.8-mile connector between Exit 160A and U.S. 76 (Palmetto Street). Photo taken 06/25/05.
Interstate 95's southbound control city shifts to Savannah from Interstate 20 southward. Interstate 20 west heads 65 miles west to junction Interstate 77 and the Capital Beltway of Columbia. The freeway serves Bishopville and Camden on the otherwise rural drive. Photo taken 06/25/05.
Exit 160B departs Interstate 95 southbound onto Interstate 20 west for Columbia. The first interchange lies four miles ahead with South Carolina 340 south of Darlington. Interstate 20 provides a major through corridor between Columbia, Augusta, Atlanta, Birmingham, Jackson, Mississippi, Monroe, Louisiana, Shreveport, Dallas, Fort Worth, Midland and Odessa, Texas, and Interstate 10 for points west to Phoenix, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Photo taken 06/25/05.
The only overhead that properly shows Business Spur Interstate 20 east is at the Exit 160A off-ramp onto David H. McLeod Boulevard east. Business Spur 20 meets Second Loop Road and U.S. 76 (Palmetto Street) two miles west of downtown Florence. The four to six lane arterial serves industrial parks nearby and interests to the Florence Visitors Center and Florence Civic Center. Photo taken 06/25/05.
