Interstate 40 & Business Loop Interstate 85 travel eight miles together to their split, the original Interstate 40 & 85 partition at what was known as "Death Valley". Interstate 85 south follows a bypass alignment south of Greensboro to junctions Interstate 73 and U.S. 421; Interstate 40 and Business Loop Interstate 85 utilize the original Interstate 85 alignment through central Greensboro, joining U.S. 29, 70, and 220 in the process. Exit 131 also serves movements onto Future Interstate 840 west, which presently consists of a two-lane freeway between Interstates 40 & 85 and U.S. 70 (Wendover Avenue). Painter Boulevard continues as a six-lane freeway from Interstate 85 to Interstate 40 near Piedmont Triad International Airport. A second diagrammatical overhead lies ahead of the Interstate 73 & U.S. 421 north and Interstate 85 southbound split. Interstate 85 merges with Business Loop Interstate 85 at Exit 121 only to part ways again at Exit 118. Interstate 85 otherwise continues southwest to Kannapolis, Concord, and Charlotte. The Exit 122 collector/distributor roadway continues through the Interstate 73 & 85 and U.S. 421 interchange with Business Loop Interstate 85 & U.S. 29-70. Interstate 85 southbound converges with Interstate Business Loop 85 & U.S. 29-70 southwest of downtown Greensboro. The two freeways merge at their interchange with Interstate 73 near Groometown. Interstate 85 maintains six lanes around the High Point and Thomasville area. Business Loop Interstate 85 & U.S. 29 south and U.S. 70 west depart Interstate 85 southbound via a four-lane expressway through High Point (pop. 85,839) and Thomasville (pop. 19,788). A trumpet interchange facilitates the movements between Business Loop Interstate 85 & U.S. 29-70 and Interstate 85 at Exit 118.
