The state highway travels between Mooresville (pop. 18,823), China Grove (pop. 3,616), and Rockwell (pop. 1,971) on its journey through Iredell and Rowan Counties. Access to North Carolina 152 in the southbound direction of Interstate 85 is available via the nearby interchange with U.S. 29 & 601 (Exit 68 sb). Photo taken 12/30/03.
Just north of the U.S. 601 merge onto Interstate 85 northbound is the one mile overhead for Exit 70 (Webb Road). Depicted here is the northbound scene at the Mt. Hope Church Road overpass). A local roadway (Delta Street) acts as a short frontage road between Mt. Hope Church Road and the U.S. 601 partial "Y" interchange (Exit 68 sb). Photo taken 12/30/03.
An early 2000's widening expands Interstate 85 between six and eight lanes through the Salisbury vicinity. Displayed in this photograph is the Exit 70 ramp departure for Webb Road. The diamond interchange between the two highways is the first of five in a row for the Salisbury area. Photo taken 12/30/03.

Construction is underway to expand Interstate 85 through the city of Salisbury (pop. 26,462). Due to the road work the sign bridge that normally guides motorists onto the Exit 76A off-ramp for U.S. 52 southbound is displaced. U.S. 52 travels Innes Street south from Salisbury toward Granite Quarry (pop. 2,175). From there the federal highway continues 25 miles to the Stanly County seat of Albemarle (pop. 15,680). Photo taken 08/08/04.
U.S. 52 northbound merges onto Interstate 85 from Exit 76 northward to Exit 87 at Lexington. The former routing of the highway comprises Innes Street northbound into downtown Salisbury to Main Street and junction U.S. 29 & 70. Exit 76B loops onto Innes Street (former U.S. 52) from Interstate 85 northbound. Photo taken 08/08/04.
Use Exit 79 of Interstate 85 & U.S. 52 for the North Carolina Transportation Museum at Spencer (pop. 3,355). The museum is host to an authentic train depot, antique automobiles, and a 37 stall roundhouse that includes 25 locomotives and other exhibit areas. Seasonal train rides, guided tours, and special events are scheduled throughout the year. Photo taken 08/08/04.

Business Loop Interstate 85 & U.S. 29-70 rejoin Interstate 85 at Exit 118. The U.S. 52 freeway between Interstate 85 and future Interstate 74 at Winston-Salem is slated for an upgrade to Interstate 285 pending AASHTO approval. NCDOT was already rejected once for the Interstate proposal however. Photo taken 08/08/04.
The Exit 87 off-ramp passes over Interstate 85 one half mile south of its diamond interchange with Hargrave Road (Exit 88). Hargrave Road (North Carolina 47) connects Old Linwood Road with the Business Loop Interstate 85 & U.S. 29-52-70 freeway to the north. Photo taken 08/08/04.

The overlap was created with the 2004 opening of the Greensboro Bypass of Interstate 85. The original Interstate 85 alignment through the city is now apart of an extended Business Loop Interstate 85 from Lexington and High Point. Photo taken 08/08/04.
Business Loop Interstate 85 & U.S. 29 north and U.S. 70 eastbound merge onto Interstate 85 northbound ahead of the Exit 119 Groometown Road interchange. A myriad of signs lie ahead for the Exit 120 split of Interstate 85 and Business Loop Interstate 85 & U.S. 29-70 and the merge with Interstate 40 east & 73 south. Groometown Road intersects the four-way overlap south of the Sedge-Town section of Greensboro. Photos taken 06/22/05 and by Jamie Dzencelowcz (02/23/08).
Auxiliary overheads for the Exit 120 interchange complex with Business Loop Interstate 85 & U.S. 29-70. The Piedmont Triad International Airport lies west of Greensboro along the Interstate 40 corridor. Photos taken 06/22/05 and by Jamie Dzencelowcz (02/23/08).

Interstate 85 northbound expands to five overall lanes in anticipation of the Exit 120 interchange. Previously signs referenced just Business Loop Interstate 85 & U.S. 29-70 here. However completion of new Interstate 40 on February 21, 2008 altered the signs to replace Interstate 40 shields with Business Loop 40 shields for Exit 120 (which is now Exit 120A). The brackets between the Interstate 85 pull-through panel and Exit 120 overhead were reserved for the Exit 121 ramps onto future Interstate 40 west & 73 north (see next photo). Photo taken 07/24/04.
A revisit to Interstate 85 & U.S. 29 north and 70 east at Exits 120A/B. Note the new Exit 120B panel for the Interstate 40 west & 73 northbound ramp onto Painter Boulevard. The tandem travel eight miles northwest to junction Future Interstate 840 near Piedmont Triad International Airport. No control point is present for Interstate 73 north. Photo taken Jamie Dzencelowcz (02/23/08).
A view of the sprawling interchange between Interstate 85, Business Loop Interstate 85 & U.S. 29-70, and Interstates 40 & 73. Interstates 40, 73, and 40 share pavement to Exit 122 (U.S. 220); Interstate 40 & 85 continue eastward to Durham (Exit 163). Completion of the southwest leg of the Greensboro Beltway was slated for 2007, but did not occur until February 2008. At that time existing Interstate 40 through the city became Business Loop Interstate 40. Photo taken 06/22/05.
