Interstate 77 North Carolina

Interstate 77 passes through a four-level stack interchange with Interstate 485 just north of the South Carolina state line in Charlotte. Sugar Creek meanders through the interchange. Photo taken 06/01/07

Looking southward at Interstate 77 from North Carolina 150 in the Mooresville community. Heavy traffic trudges southward due to a series of traffic accidents during the afternoon peak hours. Suburban development extends far north from Charlotte along the freeway corridor. Photo taken 12/30/08

Scenes Pertaining to Interstate 77
North Carolina 73 eastbound shield posted within the Exit 25 partial-cloverleaf interchange of Interstate 77 in Huntersville. North Carolina 73 follows busy Sam Furr Road through the commercial center of town. Photo taken 12/30/08.
Eastbound Sam Furr Road at the northbound on-ramp to Interstate 77. Interstate 77 continues next to Cornelius and a merge with U.S. 21 via Catawba Avenue. Photo taken 12/30/08.
Approaching the partial-cloverleaf interchange with Interstate 77 & U.S. 21 on Williamson Road south at the traffic light with Alcove Road. Alcove Road constitutes a southbound side frontage road to the freeway between Exit 33 and Langtree Road. Photo taken 12/30/08.
Entering the Exit 33 interchange, Williamson Road meets the southbound on-ramp for Interstate 77 and U.S. 22 to Cornelius and Charlotte. U.S. 21 north splits with the freeway onto Williamson Road briefly before turning northeast along Charlotte Highway. Photo taken 12/30/08.
Interstate 77 and U.S. 21 share five miles of pavement through to Exit 28 at Cornelius. U.S. 21 merges again with the freeway at Exit 16 in Charlotte. Photo taken 12/30/08.
North Carolina 150 (River Highway) eastbound within the Exit 36 diamond interchange of Interstate 77. The junction between the two highways is surrounded by shopping centers and business complexes, creating a congested traffic scenario for the east-west arterial Photo taken 12/30/08.
The northbound on-ramp for Interstate 77 to Statesville departs North Carolina 150 (West Plaza Drive) in this eastbound scene. North Carolina 150 continues a short distance to U.S. 21, which exists independent from the freeway that replaced it. Photo taken 12/30/08.
U.S. 21 northbound merges onto Interstate 77 at Exit 79. The overlap coincides with the split of U.S. 21 into Business and Bypass components. The Bypass U.S. 21 freeway pre-exists the Interstate 77 designation through the Elkin (pop. 4,109) and Jonesville (pop. 1,464) communities. Thus when Interstate 77 came to pass, U.S. 21 Bypass became part of the alignment. Pictured here are junction shields for Interstate 77 and U.S. 21 Bypass posted on North Carolina 67 eastbound for the Exit 82 partial cloverleaf interchange. Photo taken 10/05/01.
