Interstate 65 - Alabama

Interstate 65 Southbound - Prattville to Mobile County

Southbound
At Exit 179, U.S. 82 enters Interstate 65 from Prattville (pop. 24,303) and Tuscaloosa for a 13 mile overlap. To the east, the Montgomery Toll Road ties into the interchange from the Millbrook (pop. 10,386) vicinity. The Montgomery Toll Road crosses the Alabama River en route to the Alabama River Parkway and North Boulevard. The waterway bridge is where the toll is levied. Photo taken 10/01/03.

Montgomery map - AARoads.com

The city of Montgomery. In the 1980s all non-Interstate routes were removed from within the North, East, and South Boulevard loop around the city. This results in numerous overlaps along the divided surface boulevards.

Just south of the Alabama 143 southern terminus interchange of Exit 176, a simple "Y" interchange with no-access from Interstate 65 southbound, is this six lane scene. Coming into view is the Montgomery skyline. The guide sign indicates that the next 6 interchanges serve the city. Photo taken 10/01/03.
Jersey barrier construction was underway at the time of this photograph along Interstate 65 southbound. The sign bridge is posted for the upcoming trumpet interchange at Exit 173, the western terminus of Alabama 152. North Boulevard, the northern third of the Boulevard system of Montgomery, is partially a freeway between Interstate 65 and Interstate 85. Photo taken 10/01/03.
Southbound Interstate 65 at the beginning of South Boulevard. Alabama 152 (not displayed on Exit 173 guide signs) follows South Boulevard between here and U.S. 231. An interchange exists at the Alabama River Parkway and U.S. 231 along the route. Photo taken 10/01/03.
Interstate 65 is six lanes from Exit 173 northward to Exit 181. From South Boulevard to Exit 13, Interstate 65 maintains just four mainline travel lanes. This photograph also features a U.S. 82 eastbound reassurance shield. It is one of only a handful that are currently posted along the Interstate 65/U.S. 82 overlap between Prattville and the capital city. Photo taken 10/01/03.
Exit 172 is the first of two downtown area interchanges of Interstate 65 in Montgomery. The interchange is features a folded diamond at Clay Street, with a second folded diamond at Herron Street for Interstate 65 northbound. These streets represent the pre-1985 routing of U.S. 80 through the heart of the city. Photo taken 10/01/03.
Over the south banks of the Alabama River, Interstate 65 yields the off-ramp for Clay Street and Downtown. The southern terminus of Interstate 85 is just ahead, and traffic is advised to keep right for the forthcoming northbound directional ramp. It is possible that Interstate 85 may extend westward to Interstate 20-59 at Cuba. ALDOT is presently studying this option that would upgrade most of U.S. 80 along the corridor. Photo taken 10/01/03.
The merge of Exit 172 the on-ramp occurs just before the departure of the Exit 171 off-ramps to Interstate 85 north and Day Street west. This one quarter mile stretch expands Interstate 65 southbound to four lanes briefly. Photo taken 10/01/03.
Traffic to Interstate 85 and Day Street depart together from Interstate 65 northbound. Interstate 85 represents a major corridor between Atlanta and Montgomery. The northerly route crosses the Georgia state line in exactly 80 miles. Photo taken 10/01/03.
Further along the Exit 171 southbound ramp from Interstate 65, showing the Interstate 85 south return ramp to Interstate 65 high above. The sharpness of the ramp has warranted placement of "glowing guardrail" visible in the fluorescent yellow tubes. The Interstate 65 mainline bridges are in the background. Photo taken 06/05/96.
The best views of the stack interchange can be seen from the Interstate 65 southbound ramp to Interstate 85 northbound. The bridge in the foreground is that of the connecting ramps to Day Street from Interstate 85. There is no access to Day Street from Interstate 65 north, but access is granted from southbound. Photo taken 06/05/96.
The one mile guide sign for Exit 170/Fairview Avenue is placed at the Interstate 85 southern terminus stack interchange. The surface street connects Interstate 65 with Troy State University at Montgomery. Photo taken 10/01/03.
Traffic merging onto Interstate 65 southbound from Interstate 85 enters the freeway as an exit-only auxiliary lane for Exit 170. This overhead is placed one half mile north of the Fairview Avenue diamond interchange. Just to the south is Exit 169, a folded diamond interchange with Edgemont Avenue. Photo taken 10/01/03.
South Boulevard is a busy commercial strip between U.S. 31 and U.S. 231/Troy Highway. At this interchange, U.S. 82 departs Interstate 65 from the overlap that began at Exit 179. The six-lane divided artery also carries U.S. 80 and Alabama 21 (omitted from Exit 168 guide signs). South Boulevard was planned as a bypass for Montgomery, but development has filled most of the frontage with commercial plazas and residential subdivisions. Photo taken 10/01/03.
U.S. 80 westbound enters Interstate 65 at the South Boulevard interchange (Exit 168). The advent of the federal highway overlap sees the expansion of the southbound lanes to four. This expansion is quickly reduced as two of the four lanes carry U.S. 80 away from Interstate 65 toward Montgomery Regional Airport at the next exit. Photo taken 10/01/03.
The Interstate 65/U.S. 80 southbound split at Exit 167. U.S. 80 composes a short freeway between Interstate 65 and U.S. 31. The creation of this segment occurred in the mid 1990s and removed U.S. 80 from a one mile overlap with U.S. 31. The route is otherwise known as the Selma to Montgomery Historic Trail. Photo taken 10/01/03.
The interchange at Exit 164 represents the last time that U.S. 31 directly interacts with Interstate 65 southbound. The junction is also the last Montgomery County interchange that the freeway faces, yet still is within the greater Montgomery metropolitan area. Construction is underway presently to expand out the off-ramps of Interstate 65 to U.S. 31. Photo taken 10/01/03.
Interstate 65 southbound approaching Exit 158 for Lowndes County 26. The county highway links Interstate 65 with the villages of Tyson, Pintlala, and U.S. 31 to the east. The concrete of Interstate 65 through this stretch had just been paved over with asphalt at the time of this photograph. Photo taken 12/28/01.
The last of three Lowndes County interchanges is Exit 142 with Alabama 185. This state route travels east-west within the vicinity of Interstate 65, beginning just two miles to the east at U.S. 31 near the village of Logan and traveling west three miles to Fort Deposit (pop. 1,270). Photo taken 10/01/03.
Between Montgomery and Mobile, Interstate 65 is vastly rural as it cuts through tens of thousands of acres of pine forest. The stretch between Exit 142 and 130 at twelve miles is the third longest stretch of Interstate 65 in Alabama without an interchange. The longest duration at 14 miles is situated between Exits 186 and 200 north of Prattville. Photo taken 10/01/03.
A rural diamond interchange facilitates the movements between Interstate 65 and Alabama 185. Photo taken 10/01/03.
Approaching the Butler County seat of Greenville (pop. 7,228) along Interstate 65 southbound near Exit 130. Alabama 185, a north-south loop between Greenville and Fort Deposit, intersects the freeway in one mile. This junction also features the Alabama 10 Truck overlap beginning of Interstate 65 between Exit 128 and 130. Photo taken 10/01/03.
Greenville is home to several travel amenities such as gas stations, eateries, and lodging. These services are somewhat sparse further south and are not readily available along Interstate 65 until Mobile County. Alabama 10 Truck carries traffic away from the Greenville center via Interstate 65. The bannered route of Alabama 10 departs Interstate 65 at the next interchange. Photo taken 10/01/03.
Interstate 65 southbound at Exit 57 for Alabama 21. Uriah is the northbound control point, located 13 miles to the north, and is the northern terminus of Alabama 59 (accessible from Exit 34). The economy has not been good to communities northward along Alabama 21. This includes the towns of Uriah and Frisco City (pop. 1,460). Photo taken 12/29/01.
Interstate 65 southbound at Exit 54 for Escambia County 1. Similar to northbound, no control city is used on guide signage. Early morning mist associated with this winter morning enhanced the otherwise non-descript nature of Interstate 65 between Montgomery and Mobile. To the southeast, Escambia County 1 travels to the town of Atmore (pop. 7,676) and Alabama 21. Photo taken 12/29/01.
