Interstate 59 Southbound - Hattiesburg to Louisiana

Interstate 59 South
Rusted sign bridge on Interstate 59 southbound at Exit 67B for U.S. 49 northbound (and Mississippi 42 west to Sumrall). The control city is listed as Collins instead of Jackson, since traffic headed to U.S. 49 north basically does an about-face. The next interchange is a cloverleaf ramp for U.S. 49 south into Hattiesburg. Note also that the Interstate 59 southbound control city is Picayune instead of New Orleans. Photo taken 06/01.
U.S. 49 continues southeast from the Exit 67A off-ramp into north Hattiesburg, linking Interstate 59 with the University of Southern Mississippi campus at 4th Street. Mississippi 42 follows U.S. 49 through the Exit 67 full-cloverleaf interchange, but is not signed on guide signs. The state highway branches eastward from U.S. 49 via Pritchard Road east to the adjacent town of Petal (pop 7,579). Photo taken 06/12/04.
Leaving the Exit 67 cloverleaf on Interstate 59 southbound is this guide sign for the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The point of this sign is to direct U.S. 49 through traffic to U.S. 98 east/Exit 59 southwest of the city. Interstate 59, along with the three mile U.S. 98 freeway, provides a limited access bypass of the city of Hattiesburg for traffic headed south to the Biloxi and Gulfport. A future freeway is considered for the U.S. 49 corridor between Hattiesburg and Gulfport. Photo taken 06/01.

Southbound drivers next encounter the Exit 65 six-ramp partial-cloverleaf interchange with U.S. 98 west and Mississippi 198 (Hardy Street) east. Hardy Street constitutes a busy east-west arterial between the central business district and commercial areas of west Hattiesburg including Turtle Creek Mall. Photo taken 06/12/04.

University of Southern Mississippi guide sign for Exit 65 on Interstate 59 southbound. The campus lies north of Mississippi 198 (Hardy Street) and west of U.S. 49 (Northwood Drive / 26th Avenue). Overhead is a former railroad spur and West Fourth Street. Note the refurbished railroad bridge in the second photo. The former Illinois Central-Gulf Coast railroad line was converted into the 41-mile long Longleaf Trace Rail Trail, a paved path linking Hattiesburg with Prentiss. Photos taken 06/01 & 06/12/04.
U.S. 98 eastbound joins Interstate 59 south at Exit 65 in west Hattiesburg. Columbia (pop. 6,815), is situated 29 miles to the west on U.S. 98. U.S. 98 continues from there to Tylertown, McComb, and ultimately Natchez. Photo taken 06/12/04.

A two-lane off-ramp departs Interstate 59 south for U.S. 98 (Hardy Street) west and Mississippi 198 (Hardy Street) east. Mississippi 198, not signed on Exit 65 signs, represents the former U.S. 98 alignment east to U.S. 49 through Hattiesburg. U.S. 98 originally followed Hardy Street east and U.S. 49 south to its original alignment. Photo taken 06/12/04.
Ascending the Exit 65 off-ramp from Interstate 59 south to Hardy Street. This is the main connection between the University of Southern Mississippi and downtown Hattiesburg from Interstate 59 south, so two lanes are given to Mississippi 198 (Hardy Street) eastbound on the off-ramp. Hardy Street ends in 3.7 miles at U.S. 11 (Front / Pine Streets) at the central business district. Photo taken 06/12/04.
The first set of Interstate 59 south/U.S. 98 eastbound shields. U.S. 98 utilizes Interstate 59 for six miles to its own freeway through south Hattiesburg. Photo taken 06/01.
To U.S. 49/Mississippi Gulf Coast use Exit 59 guide sign on Interstate 59 south. This sign is posted to redirect traffic to U.S. 49 along U.S. 98 and corresponds with signage on Interstate 59 southbound at Exit 67/U.S. 49. The intentions are to keep through traffic on the freeways as opposed to the congested routing of U.S. 49 through the city. Photo taken 06/01.
Interstate 59 south advance guide signage for U.S. 98 east/Exit 59. This corridor is also important for travelers headed east to Florida. U.S. 98 travels 88 miles to Interstate 65 in Mobile, Alabama, five miles north of its end at Interstate 10. Photo taken 06/01.
Interstate 59 southbound at the split with U.S. 98 east. This interchange takes up quite a bit of real estate and includes provisions for an unconstructed alignment of U.S. 98 west. U.S. 98 eastbound otherwise constitutes a four-lane freeway three miles east to junction U.S. 49, and a four-lane divided highway between Hattiesburg, Beaumont, McLain, Lucedale, and the Alabama state line. Much of the route is expressway like in character. Photo taken 06/01.
Mississippi 43 follows Interstate 59 for 1.9 miles between Exits 4 and 6 to the east of Picayune (pop. 10,633). This photograph shows that it is indeed signed on Interstate 59 southbound. Photo taken 07/22/01.
Mississippi 43 ends its short overlap on Interstate 59 south at Exit 4. The highway exits onto a four lane parkway that connects U.S. 11 in Picayune with this interchange. Traffic headed south on Mississippi 43 travels 18 miles to Kiln, with Bay Saint Louis another ten miles beyond. Photo taken 07/22/01.
Southbound Interstate 59 approaching Exit 1 for U.S. 11 north and Mississippi 607 south. Mississippi 607 follows old U.S. 11 southeast to the NASA John C. Stennis Space Center. U.S. 11 north travels into the nearby community of Nicholson, while southbound merges onto Interstate 59 to cross the Pearl River. Photo taken 07/22/01.
