Interstate 59 Northbound

Interstate 59 north
Interstate 59 northbound continues through the city of Birmingham to Exit 131/Oporto-Madrid Road. The north-south surface arterial connects with Interstate 20/Exit 132 to the south near Gate City. U.S. 11, featured at the next interchange, is just two blocks to the south at this point. Photo taken 08/10/02.
At Exit 132, 1st Avenue North bisects Interstate 59. This roadway carries U.S. 11 through the East Lake neighborhood of the city. Situated nearby is East Lake Park. U.S. 11 will cross back to the south of Interstate 59 at milepost 136. Photo taken 08/10/02.
An exit-only lane reduces Interstate 59 northbound from three to four lanes. Interstate 59 overall carries four lanes from this junction northeast through Trussville and points beyond. Photo taken 09/29/03.
Upcoming exits sign one half mile southwest of the Exit 133 folded diamond interchange with 4th Avenue South. There is no return access to Interstate 59 north at this junction, nor is there direct access from Interstate 59 south to 4th Avenue South. Photo taken 08/10/02.
Interstate 59 northbound at Exit 133/4th Avenue South. 4th Avenue South ends nearby at U.S. 11/Parkway East to the north. Parkway East eventually becomes Alabama 75, the focal point of the next interchange (Exit 134). Photo taken 08/10/02.
A skewed look at the Exit 133 sign bridge from the right-hand shoulder. The lighting assemblies are original but the signs are not. To the south is a hilly residential area and Ruffner Mountain Nature Center. Photo taken 09/29/03.
A diamond interchange facilitates the movements of Interstate 59 to Roebuck Parkway. Alabama 75 itself begins at U.S. 11 just north of this junction. The state highway travels north as Parkway East and Center Point Road to depart the metropolitan area. The route continues many miles to the north through Albertville (pop. 17,247) to the Georgia state line. Photo taken 08/10/02.
An original button copy sign adorns this Exit 137 sign bridge located one mile west of the Interstate 459 northern terminus. The upcoming interchange is a three-level triangular stack interchange. The auxiliary guide sign in the background indicates that Interstate 459 serves Birmingham Race Course. Photo taken 08/10/02.
Night time view of the one-mile sign bridge of the Interstate 459 southbound beginning. This junction is that last within the city limits of Birmingham. North of here Interstate 59 enters the city of Trussville (pop. 12,924). Photo taken 08/24/03.
Button copy auxiliary sign for Exit 137. Interstate 459 allows traffic to enter the suburb of Trussville via the first mainline interchange (Exit 32). The connections with Interstate 20 and 65 are also highlighted. This type of signage is also found at the Interstate 459 southern terminus. Photo taken 08/10/02.
Flash photograph captures the Exit 137 auxiliary guide sign at night. The shields both retain the state name and feature 1979 MUTCD specifications. The south beltline intersects Interstate 20 at Exit 29 and Interstate 65 at Exit 15. The northern terminus is Exit 33. Photo taken 08/24/03.
Now one half mile southwest of the Interstate 459 terminal interchange. The Birmingham south bypass is a conduit for development of the expanding metropolitan area. This growth is especially evident through the suburbs of Hoover (pop. 62,742), Vestavia Hills (pop. 24,476), and Mountain Brook (pop. 20,604). Photo taken 08/10/02.
Newer reflectorized overheads are found at the Exit 137 departure of Interstate 459 southbound. The first five miles of Interstate 459 travel north-south while serving Trussville (Exit 32), northeast Birmingham (Exit 29), and Irondale (pop. 9,813) (Exits 29 & 27). Photo taken 08/10/02.
The control cities of Interstate 459 do not feature any of the suburbs or the city of Bessemer (pop. 29,672) (Exits 1 & 6). Instead they consist of the Interstate 20 and 65 destinations. Photo taken 08/24/03.
The tri-level stack interchange of Interstate 59/459. The top level carries Interstate 459 north to Interstate 59 southbound ramp. The second level is that of Interstate 459 south from Interstate 59 south. Photo taken 08/10/02.
Interstate 59 remains in the metropolitan area at Exit 141. This busy diamond interchange serves downtown Trussville via Chalkville Road and the northern suburb of Pinson via Chalkville Mountain Road. The immediate vicinity is buffeted by numerous travel amenities. Photo taken 08/10/02.
