Interstate 59

Northbound
Interstate 59 northbound approaching Exit 3 for U.S. 11 south and Louisiana 1090 east. The roadway to the right of the mainline is Louisiana 1090, as the highway parallels Interstate 59 southward from this interchange to Slidell. Photo taken 06/01.
U.S. 11 northbound enters Interstate 59 at Exit 3, while Louisiana 1090 comes to an end from the southeast. The U.S. route originally continued north to Pearl River, but now duplexes with Interstate 59 through to the Pearl River into Mississippi. Photo taken 06/01.
Passing the Exit 3 interchange, is the first set of Interstate 59 and U.S. 11 northbound reassurance shields. The two highways part ways at the Nicholson interchange (Mississippi Exit 1) nine miles to the north. Original U.S. 11 tied into the Interstate 59 path from Pearl River at Exit 5A to Exit 5B. From that point east, the highway passed through the Pearl River Wildlife Management Area to Saint Rose, Mississippi. This alignment was abandoned with the completion of Interstate 59 in the late 1950s. Photo taken 06/01.
Interstate 59/U.S. 11 northbound at Exit 5A for the eastern terminus of Louisiana 41 Spur. This state highway acts as a connector between Interstate 59 and Louisiana 41 through the town of Pearl River. The exit ramp actually dumps traffic onto a local frontage road, before the Spur route begins. Photo taken 06/01.
Interstate 59/U.S. 11 northbound approaching the last Louisiana interchange for Exit 11. This partial cloverleaf folds to the south, as Interstate 59 and U.S. 11 cross the Pearl River to the north. The exit actually serves an isolated area with an industrial plant located nearby. Photo taken 06/01.
Pearl River Turnaround exit sign northbound on Interstate 59/U.S. 11 at Exit 11. This photograph was taken from the northbound side frontage road that connects the freeway with the aforementioned industrial facility. Photo taken 06/01.
Southbound
The latest style of Louisiana Welcome sign in use by the Pelican State. This particular sign is posted on Interstate 59/U.S. 11 southbound past the Pearl River Turnaround interchange. Photo taken 06/01.
Approaching the Interstate 12 and 59 terminus interchange at Interstate 10 on Interstate 59 southbound. This junction is on the northeast fringes of the city of Slidell. Speed limits in every direction from this interchange are maintained at 70 mph. Photo taken 07/22/01.

The southern terminus of Interstate 59 at Exit 1A for Interstate 12 westbound to Hammond and Baton Rouge. Continuing straight takes Interstate 59 to Exits 1B/C for Interstate 10 to New Orleans and Bay Saint Louis, Gulfport, and Biloxi. Pictured here is a 2000 installed sign assembly that replaces the one pictured in the next photobbox. Photo taken 07/22/01.
A look at the Exit 1A/Interstate 12 eastbound ramp from 20 months earlier reveals the original overhead assembly. Note that the panel in the above photograph is attached to the Brown Switch Road overpass. Interstate 59 is concrete throughout all of the 11 mile Louisiana state routing. Photo taken 11/06/99.
Scenes Related to Interstate 59
Faded Interstate 59 shields at the Exit 5A interchange on Louisiana 41 Spur eastbound. This style of shields is prevalent at Interstate 59 area interchanges. Photo taken 06/01.
This Interstate 59 shield is actually posted on the Pearl River Turnaround frontage road northbound. The shield is one of the only at the interchange and is missing an arrow and its northbound counterpart. Photo taken 06/01.
Passing under the Interstate 59 and U.S. 11 Pearl River crossing at the Pearl River Turnaround (Honey Island Swamp Road). To the right is the river where some Saint Tammany Parish sheriffs were conducting some kind of exercise. It appears that fishing and hunting are the only activities to be conducted at this junction. Continuing west past the freeway overpasses takes traffic onto local gravel roads. There is no access to the rest of the Louisiana highway network from this location independent of Interstate 59/U.S. 11. Photo taken 06/01.
