Interstate 55 North
Entering the Magnolia state from Louisiana and Tangipahoa Parish along Interstate 55 northbound. The first of nine Pike County interchanges of the north-south freeway is situated one mile to the north. Photo taken 10/23/03.

The first of two exits for the town of Magnolia (pop. 2,071) is Exit 8 with Mississippi 568. This state route travels 16.6 miles southwest to the Louisiana state line. The community of Gillsburg, mentioned at Exit 1, is now 13.5 miles from Interstate 55. Photo taken 10/23/03.

Exit 13 serves the community of Fernwood and McComb/Pike County John E. Lewis Field to the east. This diamond interchange intersects the east-west Airport Fernwood Road. The surface highway otherwise connects Mississippi 48 with U.S. 51. Photo taken 10/23/03.
Forthcoming Exit 15 is the first of three interchanges for the city of McComb from I-55 north. U.S. 98 merges with the freeway for five miles north from a cloverleaf interchange. U.S. 98 enters Interstate 55 northbound via West Presley Boulevard and the city of McComb. Photo taken 10/23/03.

Mississippi 24 continues from U.S. 98 westward to the town of Liberty with Mississippi 48 in 20 miles. The state route used to end at U.S. 51 in McComb itself. The relocation of U.S. 98 from an overlap with U.S. 51 to an overlap with Interstate 55 truncated the state highway by two miles. Photo taken 10/23/03.

Situated within the diamond interchange of Exit 17 is the one mile guide sign for Exit 18/Mississippi 570. Smithdale Road travels between U.S. 51/Northwest Avenue and Delaware Avenue in the northern reaches of the city. A short distance to the north of McComb is the town of Summit (pop. 1,428). Interstate 55 splits with U.S. 98 at this locale via the Exit 20 cloverleaf interchange. Photo taken 10/23/03.
Interstate 55 north/U.S. 98 west at Exit 20A for Lawrence Street and downtown Summit. This surface arterial represents the original U.S. 98 before the highway relocated to Interstate 55. U.S. 98 departs Interstate 55 after a five mile overlap. From here to the northwest, U.S. 98 travels 30 miles to U.S. 84 and Bude (pop. 1,037). There the route overlaps 35 miles westward to the Mississippi River city of Natchez (pop. 18,464). Photo taken 10/23/03.
Exit 24 is situated along the Pike and Lincoln County line at Freeman Road. This local roadway connects Interstate 55 with U.S. 51 and Johnsons Station to the east. County Line Road ties into Freeman Road west of the junction. Photo taken 10/23/03.

The grassy median of Interstate 55 transitions into a tree filled median. The carriageways are far enough apart that they are not visible from one another. The same configuration exists along rural portions of Interstate 20 and 59 in Mississippi. Photo taken 10/23/03.
Exit 30 for the village of Bogue Chitto (pop. 533) departs Interstate 55 northbound. While Bogue Chitto travels east to U.S. 51 and the community by the same name, Nearby Grandview Lane Southeast links Exit 30 with the U.S. 51 settlement of Norfield. Photo taken 10/23/03.
Approaching the Exit 38 diamond interchange with U.S. 84 southwest of Brookhaven (pop. 9.861). U.S. 84 is a significant east-west corridor through south-central Mississippi. The U.S. highway enters the state at Natchez 60 miles to the west. Photo taken 10/23/03.
U.S. 84 also serves the towns of Bude and Meadville (pop. 519) along the route to Natchez. U.S. 98 ties into the divided highway between these two towns. Eastward U.S. 84 travels 23 miles to the Lawrence County seat of Monticello (pop. 1,726). A four lane bypass of the town is currently under construction. Photo taken 10/23/03.
Traffic to U.S. 84 and south Brookhaven departs Interstate 55 northbound. The city of Brookhaven itself is four miles to the northeast. U.S. 84 is a divided four lane expressway from Natchez eastward to the Lincoln/Lawrence County line. Construction will eventually see the corridor four laned all the way to Interstate 59. Exit 45 begins a short expressway segment of U.S. 51, with an interchange to Gallatin Street, that stems into downtown Jackson at State Street. This interchange was under reconstruction as well, being converted to a single-point-urban-interchange (SPUI). The state route connects U.S. 51 to the east and Mississippi 22 to the northwest.
