A wide directional-cloverleaf interchange constitutes Exits 306B/A with Interstate 40 and U.S. 70. U.S. 70 Business meets the Clayton Bypass at U.S. 70's transition back into its old route. Interstate 40 merges with U.S. 64 west on the south side of downtown Raleigh while U.S. 64 east travels Interstate 440 west (north) to the Knightdale bypass with U.S. 264. Interstate 440 was originally signed as the Inner and Outer Beltline along with cardinal directions for the different directions it took. Now the signing is simplified with Interstate 440 traveling east/west and Interstate 40 traveling by itself. Interstate 440's westbound beginning departs Interstate 40 west at Exit 301. Interstate 440 initially travels northeast with U.S. 64 to the Knightdale bypass (Exit 14). There U.S. 64 joins U.S. 264 east to Knightdale and Zebulon while Interstate 440 bends northwest toward U.S. 1. Interstate 540 currently ends at U.S. 64 & 264 east of the Neuse River. Although not displayed here, Exit 298B carries drivers onto U.S. 70 west & 401-North Carolina 50 north into downtown Raleigh via South Saunders Street. The trio were signed along the freeways of Raleigh at one point, but were returned to their surface routes.
