Interstate 40 Eastbound - Winston-Salem and Greensboro

Interstate 40 East
Diagrammatical overhead posted along Interstate 40 eastbound in anticipation of the split with Business Loop Interstate 40 & U.S. 421 (Exit 212). Drivers destined for downtown Greensboro along the old route must now exit the Interstate 40 mainline at Exit 212. Exit 212 also serves movements to Future Interstate 73 north & Future Interstate 840 east to Bryan Boulevard. Bryan Boulevard constitutes an east-west freeway between Benjamin Parkway and North Carolina 68. Photo taken by Jamie Dzencelowcz (02/23/08).
Interstate 40 expands to six lanes at the split with Business Loop Interstate 40 (Exit 212). Business Loop Interstate 40 east & U.S. 421 south continue seven miles to their merge with Business Loop Interstate 85 & U.S. 20-70 south of downtown. Future Interstates 73 & 840 travel three miles north to Bryan Boulevard; Bryan Boulevard represents a leg of the planned alignment of Interstate 73 northwest from Greensboro. Photo taken by Jamie Dzencelowcz (02/23/08).
Interstate 73 south leaves Future Interstate 840 for Interstate 40 (Painter Boulevard) east and approaches Exit 214 with Wendover Avenue. Wendover Avenue constitutes an east-west arterial from central Greensboro westward to North Carolina 68. Photo taken by Jamie Dzencelowcz (02/23/08).
Interstate 40 traffic merges with Interstate 73 south as a six lane freeway. The six-ramp partial-cloverleaf interchange (Exit 214) with Wendover Avenue lies a short distance southward. Photo taken by Jamie Dzencelowcz (02/23/08).
Guilford College Road passes under Interstate 40 & 73 ahead of the Wendover Avenue off-ramp (Exit 214). Wendover Avenue meets Business Loop Interstate 40 to the east before upgrading to a controlled-access expressway. Photo taken by Jamie Dzencelowcz (02/23/08).
"Reassurance shields" for Interstate 40 & 73, posted after Wendover Avenue. Bridford Parkway passes over Painter Boulevard in the distance. Photo taken by Jamie Dzencelowcz (02/23/08).
Interstate 40 east & 73 south continue uninterrupted to junction Interstate 85, Business Loop Interstate 85, U.S. 29 & 70 (Exit 218). Photo taken by Jamie Dzencelowcz (02/23/08).
A complex interchange joins Interstates 40 & 73 with Interstate 85 and Business Loop Interstate 85 & U.S. 29-70 at Exit 218. Interstates 40 & 73 join Interstate 85 north briefly to Exit 122. Business Loop Interstate 85 & U.S. 29-70 follow original Interstate 85 northeast toward central Greensboro. Interstate 85 & U.S. 29-70 south continue two miles to their split at Business Loop Interstate 85 south ahead of High Point. Photo taken by Jamie Dzencelowcz (02/23/08).
Exit 218 departs Interstate 40 east & 73 south for Interstate 85 & U.S. 29 south and U.S. 70 west to High Point. U.S. 29 & 70 follow Business Loop Interstate 85 through High Point and Thomasville while Interstate 85 bypasses to the south en route to Saulsbury, Concord, and Charlotte. Photo taken by Jamie Dzencelowcz (02/23/08).
Exit 219 quickly follows for Business Loop Interstate 85 & U.S. 29 north and U.S. 70 east into Greensboro. The trio continue together six miles to Henry Boulevard in east Greensboro. Business Loop Interstate 85 combines with Loop 40 for the return to Interstates 40 & 85 at Future Interstate 840. Photo taken by Jamie Dzencelowcz (02/23/08).
A rare occurrence in the Interstate system happens briefly between Exits 219 and 220, where Interstates 40, 73, and 85 combine. The only other occurrences at present are with Interstates 39-90-94 in Wisconsin and Interstates 55-64-70 in St. Louis. While brief, Interstate 73 however will depart via Exit 220 onto U.S. 220 south for Randleman and Asheboro. Photo taken by Jamie Dzencelowcz (02/23/08).
Exit 220 consists of a three-quarter cloverleaf interchange between Interstates 40, 73, 85 and U.S. 220. Two of the eight movements are missing due to the nearby confluence of U.S. 220 with Business Loop Interstate 85 & U.S. 29-70. U.S. 220 continues from there with the trio eastward to Henry Boulevard. Southward, Future Interstate 73 follows U.S. 220 southward to Interstate 74 at Randleman and both highways to Ellerbe. Photo taken by Jamie Dzencelowcz (02/23/08).
