Interstate 20 east
Just east of the Interstate 20-59 trumpet interchange where the two routes split is Exit 130B with U.S. 11. 1st Avenue travels through the Woodlawn neighborhood of Birmingham. To the east via Georgia Road is the East Gate neighborhood. Photo taken 09/27/03.
The second and final Birmingham city interchange of Interstate 20 is Exit 132A at Oporto-Madrid Boulevard. Exit 132A is signed also with U.S. 78. The federal route parallels Interstate 20 along the Bankhead Highway/Crestwood Boulevard from east Birmingham through the city of Irondale (pop. 9,813). Interstate 20 eastbound at Exit 135 for Old Leeds Road. Leeds (pop. 10,455) is a town about ten miles to the east along U.S. 78 where the southern terminus of U.S. 411 is located. A direct connection with U.S. 78 exists at Exit 140 in the city of Leeds. The partial cloverleaf interchange serves the Scott City and downtown area of the municipality via Parkway Drive (U.S. 78). Four miles to the east of U.S. 78 is a six-ramp partial-cloverleaf interchange with U.S. 411 (Moody Parkway). This north-south route sees its southern terminus in downtown Leeds at U.S. 78 (Parkway Drive). At Interstate 20, the highway is a divided multi-lane surface arterial flanked with commercial establishments and travel amenities. U.S. 231 travels northward from Panama City, Florida to Dothan, Troy, Montgomery, Sylacauga, Pell City, Oneonta, and Huntsville, Alabama. Interstate 20 from this junction eastward through the metropolitan area of Anniston sees a reduced 60 mph speed limit with rigid enforcement. Approaching one of three Anniston (pop. 24,276) area interchanges of Interstate 20. Exit 179 currently connects to Talladega County 467 (Coldwater Road) near U.S. 78 and Alabama 202. A project to extend Alabama 202 southward from Anniston to Interstate 20 should be completed by spring 2006. The Exit 179 interchange also serves the Anniston Army Depot. The facility is involved in the repair of military vehicles as well as the storage of various chemical weapons and other larger scale munitions. The completion of the new Alabama 202 four-lane highway between Exit 179 (Priebes Mill Road) and the old Alabama 202 alignment will better serve the depot and areas of west Anniston. Interstate 20 straddles the Talladega and Calhoun County line ahead of the Exit 185 diamond interchange with Alabama 21 (Lake Street). Alabama 21 merges with U.S. 431 north of Interstate 20 at junction U.S. 78 (Hamric Drive). From there U.S. 431 & Alabama 21 travel through Oxford to Anniston. Attractions within the Talladega National Forest include the Talladega Scenic Byway (Alabama 281) and Cheaha State Park. The state highway turns south onto Almon Street for 1.5 miles to the Exit 199 diamond interchange with Interstate 20.
