Interstate 10 - Statewide

Interstate 10 serves the greater New Orleans metropolitan area as the main route from the east and west. The freeway serves Slidell as it enters Louisiana from the Magnolia State where it meets Interstate 12 & 59. At I-12 & 59, Interstate 10 turns southwest toward Lake Pontchartrain and the city of New Orleans. It was the seven-mile bridge over Lake Pontchartrain that was partially toppled by the storm surge of Hurricane Katrina. The twin spans were closed for several months as crews rushed to either reset the displaced slabs or build one of two temporary spans for slabs that were damaged beyond repair. During that time, U.S. 11 represented the only direct link between Slidell and New Orleans.

Nine months after Katrina's impact on the Gulf Coast, Interstate 10 carries four lanes across Lake Pontchartrain and six lanes otherwise between Slidell and New Orleans. A resurfacing project is underway in the Slidell area to address badly buckled concrete slats between the bridge and Interstates 12 & 59. A future project involves the replacement of the Pontchartrain twin bridges with new three-lane spans. See the Hurricane Katrina Road Information page for more details.

A $24.3 million project began in the spring of 2006 to replace the aged concrete surface of Interstate 10 between Interstates 12 & 59 and the twin bridges. The 6.65-mile project involves the rubblizing of the concrete road bed and the overlay of six inches of asphalt pavement above. Completion is slated for November 2006.1 The project is similar in scope to the rubblizing and asphalt project of 1961 and 1963 concrete along Interstate 95 in northern Delaware.

Scenes pertaining to Interstate 10
Causeway Boulevard northbound at the full-cloverleaf interchange with Interstate 10. The interchange between Causeway Boulevard and Interstate 10 at Metairie is one of the most congested within the New Orleans metropolitan area. Causeway Boulevard comprises a busy surface arterial to the south of Interstate 10 and a busy commuter route between the freeway and Lake Pontchartrain Causeway north to Mandeville and Convington. A flyover ramp is planned to replace the loop ramp from Causeway Boulevard south to Interstate 10 east in the near future. Pier supports are already in place for that connection.
