Athens Perimeter Highway
Formerly signed as a north and southbound roadway, the Athens Perimeter Highway now carries Inner and Outer banners for Georgia Loop 10. The freeway encircles the city of Athens and carries U.S. 29, 78, 129, 441, and Georgia 15 at any given time. Interchanges are given exit numbers and a signing replacement project is underway in 2003.

Georgia 10 departs the Athens loop via Atlanta Highway and overlaps with U.S. 78 Business for 3.5 miles to the interchange with University Parkway (U.S. 29-78 & Georgia 316). Georgia 324 parts the Atlanta Highway at the Georgia 10 & U.S. 78 Business southward turn onto the Monroe Highway two miles west of Georgia Loop 10. The state highway follows the original U.S. 29 through Bogart (pop. 1,049), Statham (pop. 2,040), Russell, and Winder (pop. 10,201). Photo taken 01/17/04.

| Georgia Loop 10 Inner & U.S. 29 northbound approaching Exit 7 (Prince Avenue). Prince Avenue carries U.S. 129 & Georgia 15 Alternate between Homewood Drive and the Athens Perimeter Highway. Southward Prince Avenue (Georgia 15 Alternate) heads into downtown along the former route of U.S. 129. U.S. 129 overlaps with Georgia Loop 10 Inner between Exits 7 and 17 (Macon Highway). Otherwise U.S. 129 & Georgia 15 Alternate (Jefferson Road) travel 17 miles south from Jefferson (pop. 3,825) to the city of Athens. Photo taken 01/17/04.

| Georgia Loop 10 Inner & U.S. 29 north and U.S. 129 south at the Exit 9 diamond interchange with U.S. 441 & Georgia 15 (Commerce Road). 18 miles separate U.S. 441 from Commerce (pop. 5,292) and the Athens Perimeter Highway. Nicholson (pop. 1,247) resides ten miles north of Athens. U.S. 441 & Georgia 15 merge onto Georgia Loop 10 Inner and friends at Exit 9. The highways continue southward to the Macon Highway interchange of Exit 17 (U.S. 129). Photo taken 01/17/04.

| East of the Danielsville Road and North Avenue interchange (Exit 10) is the U.S. 29 northbound split from the Athens Perimeter Highway. A three-quarter cloverleaf interchange sees U.S. 29 depart via a loop ramp from the left as Georgia Loop 10 Inner and U.S. 129-441 & Georgia 15 south turn southward. Exit 11 is signed with the Georgia 72 control point of Elberton (pop. 4,743). Georgia 72 (Hull Road) begins 1.5 miles to the north. Photo taken 01/17/04.

| Georgia Loop 10 & U.S. 78 eastbound at Exit 17 (U.S. 129-441 & Georgia 15 south). The trio of routes follow Macon Highway southward from the Athens Perimeter Highway to Watkinsville (pop. 2,097) and Bishop (pop. 146) en route to Madison (pop. 3,636). U.S. 129 & 441 overall overlap 58 miles between Eatonton (pop. 6,764) and the city of Athens. U.S. 129-441 & Georgia 15 merge onto
Georgia Loop 10 at the Milledge Avenue (Georgia 15 Alternate) interchange of Exit 15 in two miles. From there the three highways share pavement with the Athens loop for six miles to Exit 9. Photo taken 01/17/04.

| The Athens Perimeter Highway Outer loop at Exit 15 (Milledge Avenue). U.S. 129-441 & Georgia 15 join Georgia Loop 10 & U.S. 78 via the Milledge Avenue diamond interchange from the north. Milledge Avenue (Georgia 15 Alternate) intersects Macon Highway (U.S. 129-441 & Georgia 15) just north of Exit 15. Otherwise the north-south surface avenue carries Georgia 15 Alternate through downtown to Prince Avenue. The avenue ends two miles to the south at Whitehall & Simonton Bridge
Roads. While the pull-through panel displays U.S. 29, Georgia Loop 10 does not meet U.S. 29 until
Exit 11. Photo taken 01/17/04.

| Georgia Loop 10 Outer and U.S. 129-441 & Georgia 15 north split with U.S. 78 eastbound at Exit 13. U.S. 78 & Georgia 10 travel Lexington Road to Athens/Ben Epps Airport eastward to the Clarke County line. The pair continue from there along Athens Road to Crawford (pop. 807) and Lexington (pop. 239) in 16 miles. U.S. 78 Business enters the fold from O'Conee Street and
downtown Athens from the northwest. Photo taken 01/17/04.

| A non-freeway segment of Georgia Loop 10 exists between U.S. 78 & Georgia 10 (Exit 13) and Exit 11A (Old Hull Road). The Athens Perimeter Highway (U.S. 129-441 & Georgia 15 north) transition back into a freeway ahead of the junction with U.S. 29 (Exit 11). Pictured here
is a soon to be replaced diagrammatical overhead for the half-diamond interchange with Old Hull Road (Exit 11A) and the U.S. 29 entry point onto the Athens Perimeter Highway (Exit 11). Photo taken 01/17/04.
|
| To remain on Georgia Loop 10 Outer and U.S. 129-441 & Georgia 15 northbound at Exit 11 (U.S. 29), traffic must utilize a loop ramp. The mainline of the Athens Perimeter Highway otherwise defaults onto U.S. 29 northbound for Danielsville (pop. 457). Photo taken 01/17/04.
|
| U.S. 29 southbound merges onto Georgia Loop 10 Outer and U.S. 129-441 & Georgia 15 northbound at Exit 11. Situated just west of there is the Exit 10 diamond interchange with Danielsville Road & North Avenue. North Avenue travels 1.5 miles out of downtown to Georgia Loop 10, becoming Danielsville Road and Georgia 106 in the process. Photo taken 01/17/04.

| An auxiliary lane adds to Georgia Loop 10 & U.S. 29-129-441
and Georgia 15 fray between Exits 10 (Danielsville Road & North Avenue) and Exit 11 (Commerce Road).
The upcoming diamond interchange sees U.S. 441 & Georgia 15 north part ways with the Athens Perimeter
Highway for Nicholson and Commerce. Photo taken 01/17/04.

| Georgia Loop 10 Outer & U.S. 29 southbound at Exit 1,
the eastern terminus of Georgia 316 (University Parkway). Departing here is U.S. 29 south and entering
U.S. 78 east. U.S. 29-78 & Georgia 316 overlap together on University Parkway between the Athens Perimeter
Highway and Georgia 10 & U.S. 78 Business (Monroe Highway). U.S. 78 provides the main route between Athens
and Monroe (pop. 11,407). U.S. 29 & Georgia 316 pair together to Lawrenceville (pop. 22,397). There Georgia
316 splits with U.S. 29 en route to Interstate 85. Photo taken 01/17/04.
