LeJeune Road

Routing

Florida 953 is LeJeune Road, which connects U.S. 1 with Florida 924 in Opa-Locka. Most motorists know of Florida 953 for the section between Florida 836 (Dolphin Expressway) and Florida 112 (Airport Expressway), since this stretch serves Miami International Airport.

Many thanks to Justin Cozart and Jason Learned for the background information about Florida 953. This information was originally posted on TropicalTurnpikes.com and is reproduced with permission by Justin Cozart.

Northbound Florida 953
Upon passing the main interchange for access into Miami International Airport, Florida 953 continues north along LeJeune Road toward Hialeah. Since most traffic is traveling toward downtown Miami, the beaches, or freeway system, Florida 953 becomes a heavily traveled route, with the right two lanes preparing to transition directly onto eastbound Toll Florida 112 (Airport Expressway), which takes a due east direction toward downtown Miami. This ramp to South River Drive offers a connection via N.W. 31st Street between Florida 953 and South River Drive. South River Drive parallels the Miami Canal, which is basically the replacement for the Miami River through this area. The canal angles southeast toward downtown Miami. Photo taken 12/28/03.
Here, northbound Florida 953 reaches the connection to South River Drive, eastbound Florida 112 (Airport Expressway, which is tolled in the eastbound direction only) to Interstate 95 and Interstate 195, and U.S. 27. Photo taken 12/28/03.
Here, northbound Florida 953 (LeJeune Road) passes under Florida 112 (Airport Expressway). Photo taken 12/28/03.

The interchange between Florida 953, Toll Florida 112, U.S. 27, and Florida 948 (Doral Boulevard/N.W. 36th Street) was under construction at the time this photo was taken. This traffic signal is located just north of the ramps to U.S. 27 and Florida 112 (Airport Expressway). Photo taken 12/28/03.
A span wire traffic signal is used for the Florida 948/Doral Boulevard intersection. Florida 948 extends from Florida 826/Palmetto Expressway east to U.S. 27/Florida 25 a few blocks east of here via N.W. 36th Street (Doral Boulevard). Photo taken 12/28/03.
The newly configured ramp was nearing completion but was not quite done in December 2003. Photo taken 12/28/03.
Florida 944 follows Hialeah Drive west to U.S. 27 and N.W. 54th Street east toward Brownsville and Liberty City. Photo taken 12/28/03.
These Florida 944 shields are narrower than typical for a three-digit state road. Florida 944 is a fairly short state road between U.S. 27 in the west and U.S. 1 in the east. Photo taken 12/28/03.
Northbound Florida 953 is again signed with a reassurance marker after the Florida 944 intersection. Photo taken 12/28/03.
Florida 953 northbound prepares to intersect its next major state road at East 25th Street/N.W. 79th Street. Most streets in Hialeah are dually numbered: 25th Street is the numbered grid pattern for the city, while N.W. 79th Street provides the location of the street within the metropolitan area's grid system. Photo taken 12/28/03.
The Metrorail, which ferries commuters from Hialeah southeast to Miami, comes into view as northbound Florida 953 approaches the intersection with Florida 934 (N.W. 79th Street). Photo taken 12/28/03.
Florida 934 travels east to the northern edge of the city of Miami, then crosses Biscayne Bay toward North Bay Village and Normandy Shores in the city of Miami Beach. To the west, Florida 934 skirts the southeastern edge of the Hialeah Race Track, then connects to Florida 823 (Red Road), U.S. 27/Florida 25, and ultimately Florida 926 (Palmetto Expressway). Photo taken 12/28/03.
A Tri-Rail trailblazer points the way to the Metrorail Station at the intersection of Florida 934 and East 11th Avenue (N.W. 38th Avenue), just a few blocks east of here. Photo taken 12/28/03.
This reassurance shield is found after the Florida 934/East 25th Street intersection in Hialeah. Photo taken 12/28/03.
Florida 932 is another major east-west arterial across Miami-Dade County. It originates at U.S. 27/Florida 25 (Okeechobee Road) in Hialeah Gardens, then travels east via N.W. 103rd Street (49th Street in Hialeah) en route to Miami Shores. At Miami Shores, Florida 932 ends at Florida 915 (N.E. 5th Avenue) near the Miami Shores Country Club. Photo taken 12/28/03.
Florida 953 has six through lanes plus auxiliary turning lanes upon reaching Florida 932 (49th Street). Photo taken 12/28/03.
Northbound Florida 953 remains a busy route, following LeJeune Road through Hialeah. The next major interchange along Florida 953 will be for Toll Florida 924, Gratigny Parkway. Photo taken 12/28/03.
In fact, a trailblazer for Toll Florida 924 is posted just prior to the East 56th Street intersection. Not mentioned on this sign is that Florida 924 is the best route to northbound Interstate 75. Photo taken 12/28/03.
Near East 61st Street, Florida 953 makes a turn to the northeast in order to connect to Toll Florida 924 via an interchange. Although not signed here, Florida 953 turns northeast here, bringing the state road onto the LeJeune-Douglas Expressway into Opa-Locka. Photo taken 12/28/03.
The transition from LeJeune Road onto the expressway is known as the N.W. 42nd /37th Avenue Connector. The lanes continuing north on Florida 953 to Florida 924 are allowed to move continuously (per the green arrow traffic signals placed here). Photo taken 12/28/03.
Northbound Florida 953 reaches Toll Florida 924 (Gratigny Parkway) in Opa-Locka just east of Amelia Earhart Park. Florida 924 west connects to Interstate 75 and Florida 826 (Palmetto Expressway), while eastbound into N.W. 119th Street en route to North Miami. Photo taken 12/28/03.
The Florida 924 overpass spans all lanes of Florida 953. The toll road is fairly new, having been constructed through the 1980s-1990s. Photo taken 12/28/03.
No mention of Interstate 75 or Florida 826 is made on any of the approach signs along northbound Florida 953 at Florida 924. Photo taken 12/28/03.
