The Florida 686 & 688 merge is short, so motorists must quickly move into the appropriate lane for the continuation of Roosevelt Boulevard southeast via Florida 686 or Ulmerton Road east to Interstate 275 via Florida 688. Access to Interstate 275 south is available at the interchange, but signs direct motorists bound for St. Petersburg onto Florida 686 (Roosevelt Boulevard) for its interchange at Exit 30. Roosevelt Boulevard carries Florida 686 southeast to a diamond interchange with Interstate 275 and overall to the junction of U.S. 92 & Florida 687 (4th Street North) with Gandy Boulevard (U.S. 92 east / Florida 694 west). Florida 688 (Ulmerton Road) leaves Florida 686 (Roosevelt Boulevard) and sees a reassurance shield, mileage sign to Tampa (13 miles), and Interstate 275 trailblazer. The southbound ramp also connects with Martin Luther King Jr. Street (Pinellas County 803) south. Florida 688 eastbound at the Interstate 275 southbound off-ramp. The interchange between the two highways was upgraded in the mid 2000s from a simple partial "Y" interchange in conjunction with a redesign of Interstate 275's interchange with Pinellas County 803. Photo taken 01/28/07. The interchange redesign added both the ramp to Interstate 275 south and the ramp to Pinellas County 803 (Martin Luther King Jr. Street) south. Travelers merging onto Interstate 275 north otherwise cannot depart the freeway until Kennedy Drive in Tampa. That is a dicey proposition given the tendency of the Howard Frankland Bridge to back up during the afternoon peak hours of traffic. Photo taken 01/28/07. Florida 688 West Florida 686 briefly merges with Florida 688 along Ulmerton Road from split sections of Roosevelt Boulevard near Carillon. Before the two get comfortable with one another, Florida 686 splits via a partial interchange south of St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport. Photo taken 11/04/07. Florida 686 (Roosevelt Boulevard) turns northward to the airport, High Point, and Largo while Florida 688 continues along Ulmerton Road west into the heart of Largo en route to Indian Rocks Beach.
