Florida 399
In 1999 the connector road and Bob Sikes Bridge between U.S. 98 in Gulf Breeze and Pensacola Beach, Florida 399 was truncated as maintenance of the bridge itself was handed over to the Escambia County. The toll bridge ($1 per passenger vehicle) is situated across Santa Rosa Sound between Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties. So in effect, the trumpet interchange and a very short amount of pavement south of the junction with U.S. 98 are officially Florida 399. Florida 399 shields do not reappear again until east of the Gulf Shores National Seashore at Navarre Beach. However these shields are in error, as all of the state highway in and near Navarre is designated Santa Rosa County 399. Florida 399 originally continued east of the Bob Sikes Bridge to the Navarre Beach Causeway and U.S. 98.

Florida 399 (Pensacola Beach Road) prepares to partition into ramps for U.S. 98 (Gulf Breeze Parkway) east and west. U.S. 98 travels 6.2 miles east to Florida Toll 281 and the Garcon Point Bridge. Westward Gulf Breeze Parkway enters the heart of Gulf Breeze on the five mile trek into Pensacola. Photo taken 05/09/04. |
| Florida 399 comes to an end from the southerly direction at this interchange with U.S. 98. These white on black U.S. 98 shields have also kicked the bucket in favor of standard MUTCD compliant shields (displayed above). Photo taken 12/03/00.

In an attempt to encourage drivers to use the tolled Garcon Point Bridge ($3.00 per passenger vehicle), Interstate 10 trailblazers direct motorists onto U.S. 98 both east and west for their respective direction. A second set of U.S. 98 shields accompany a Florida Toll 281 and Garcon Point Bridge trailblazer at the gore point split of the Gulf Breeze Parkway eastbound ramp. Photo taken 05/09/04. |

U.S. 98 eastbound reassurance shield assembly erroneously cosigned with a Florida 399 southbound shield ahead of Florida 399's western terminus. Florida 399 begins ahead at the Pensacola Beach Road trumpet interchange. However there is no overlapped segment with U.S. 98 on the Gulf Breeze Parkway. Florida 399 eastbound constitutes about a quarter mile of Pensacola Beach Road between U.S. 98 and Soundview Trail. Photo taken 05/09/04. |

U.S. 98 travels through a segment of the Gulf Islands National Seashore before entering the Gulf Breeze vicinity at junction Florida 399 (Pensacola Beach Road). Pensacola Beach Road provides one of two bridges across the Intracoastal Waterway to Santa Rosa Island and Escambia County 399. The Bob Sikes Bridge spans the waterway between Gulf Breeze and Pensacola Beach one quarter mile to the south. Photos taken 05/09/04. |

Westbound U.S. 98 at the Florida 399 (Pensacola Beach Road) southbound loop ramp. A trumpet interchange comprises the junction between the two routes. Florida 399 exists only on the approach to the tolled Bob Sikes Bridge ($1.00 car toll per passenger vehicle). Santa Rosa / Escambia County 399 continue Pensacola Beach Road southward into Pensacola Beach itself. Fishing, sun-bathing, and wind-surfing are among the resort area attractions of Pensacola Beach on the Emerald Coast. Photos taken 05/09/04. |

Almost as quickly as Florida 399 (Pensacola Beach Boulevard) begins, the state highway portion of roadway ends. Traffic from the U.S. 98 westbound loop ramp joins the eastbound flow ahead of the intersections for McAbee Court and Soundview Trail. A condo complex and marina line Florida 399 westbound along the Intracoastal Waterway. Photo taken 05/09/04. |

A look at the Bob Sikes Bridge across the Intracoastal Waterway into Pensacola Beach. Traffic was snarled due to the toll plaza on the south side of the bridge. A $1.00 fee is levied on all passenger vehicles entering Santa Rosa Island. Escambia County 399 continues Pensacola Beach Road southward to Fort Pickens Road and Via de Luna Drive. Remnants of the original Florida 399 span are visible to the left. These segments remained in use as fishing piers. Photo taken 05/09/04. |

| A rare Escambia County 399 reassurance shield in Pensacola Beach. The County highway is basically unsigned throughout the Gulf Islands National Seashore and Pensacola Beach vicinity. This shield is located soon after leaving the seashore area from the east and is the only we have been able to find. Photo taken 03/16/02.

| Northbound Florida 399 at the terminus with U.S. 98/Gulf Breeze Parkway. The junction between the two highways is a standard trumpet interchange. The colored shields here have since been replaced (by June of 2001). The city of Pensacola is about six miles to the northwest of this location. Photo taken 12/03/00.

| Eastbound within the Gulf Islands National Seashore. Condominium high rises are out of view beyond the sand dunes. Santa Rosa Sound is located to the north with the Gulf of Mexico to the right. Various parking areas and pavilions line each side of Escambia County 399 on its trek through the park area. The water is indeed green in the Gulf of Mexico through this stretch, and justifies the nickname of northwest Florida as the Emerald Coast. Photo taken 06/01.

| Eastbound within the Navarre Beach incorporation limits. This area was hard hit by the 1995 hurricanes Erin and Opal. One house was even swept out into Santa Rosa Sound and left somewhat intact. The house, owned by people from Michigan, stood as a testament to the fury of Hurricane Opal for over six months after the storm swept the area. Photo taken 06/01.

| Northbound on Florida Toll 399 crossing Santa Rosa Sound back to the mainland at U.S. 98/Gulf Breeze Parkway. This bridge, dubbed "the Navarre Bridge" carries a $1 toll per passenger vehicle in the southbound direction. A manmade causeway links to the toll bridge from the island itself. Photo taken 06/01.

| Shield assembly on Florida Toll 399 northbound at the terminus with U.S. 98. Florida 87, located nearby, is the main north-south route between the coastal areas and Interstate 10 in Santa Rosa County. Fort Walton Beach, Destin, and Elgin Air Force Base are all located eastbound on U.S. 98 in Okaloosa County. The Garcon Point Bridge (Florida Toll 281), opened to traffic in 1999, offers a third northbound exit route from the coastal areas and is located midway between Florida 87 and the 3-Mile Pensacola Bay Bridge on U.S. 98.
