Florida 289 / Ninth Avenue

One of the main corridors within the city of Pensacola, Florida 289 follows Ninth Avenue from Cervantes Street (U.S. 90/98) northward to Florida 290/Olive Road just outside of the city limits. The highway transitions through residential neighborhoods from the south end northward to Fairfield Drive (Florida 295) before being flocked by commercial strip mall type development through to Florida 742/Creighton Road. Cordova Mall and Pensacola Junior College are also located throughout this stretch. The northern terminus was recently reconstructed to allow for a protected turn lane from Florida 290 west to Florida 289 south. Two left-hand lanes also now facilitate traffic between Florida 289 north to Florida 290 west. This project coincided with a widening of Florida 289 north of Interstate 10, bringing the entire duration of Ninth Avenue up to four lanes.

Mileage: 7.28 (Source: Original Florida Route Log compiled by Justin Cozart)
Southern Terminus - U.S. 90/98/Pensacola
U.S. 98 east & Florida 289 (Ninth Avenue) southbound near U.S. 98 Business east (Chase Street) at De Leon Street. Florida 289 draws to a silence close here as U.S. 98 overtakes Chase Street eastbound from the business route en route to the Pensacola Bay Bridge. Photo taken Photo taken 05/09/04.
Florida 289 ends, U.S. 98 Business ends, and U.S. 98 eastbound turns eastward toward Gulf Breeze and Pensacola Beach. Ninth Avenue continues another six blocks south to Florida 196 (Bayfront Parkway) and the Pensacola Bay shoreline. Photo taken Photo taken 05/09/04.
Although Florida 289 signage concludes at the intersection with Cervantes Street, the route itself is still designated secretly southward to Gregory Street along U.S. 98 (Ninth Avenue). This makes sense when one contemplates the Florida numbering system and ascertains that all U.S. routes have state highway counterparts. With that stated, this old style Business U.S. 98 shield resides on Ninth Avenue northbound as it prepares to cross U.S. 98 west (Gregory Street). Florida 289 secretly begins at the upcoming intersection. Photo taken 12/06/03.
U.S. 98 (Gregory Street) westbound at the westbound beginning of U.S. 98 Business and the southern terminus of hidden Florida 289. U.S. 98 & Florida 289 overlap northward from Gregory Street to Cervantes Street. At Cervantes Street, Florida 289 reveals itself along Ninth Avenue northbound. Photo taken 12/06/03.
Northern Terminus - Florida 290/northern Pensacola
Florida 289 ends at Olive Road (Florida 290) in north Pensacola. The 2001 reconstructed intersection composes the north end of the main portion of Ninth Avenue. Olive Road carries Florida 289 motorists eastward to U.S. 90 (Scenic Highway) and westward to Florida 291 (Davis Highway). Photo taken 11/16/03.
The northern terminus of Florida 289 as seen from Florida 290 eastbound. This intersection represents the north end of the main portion of Ninth Avenue (Ninth Avenue sees a disjointed spur from Johnson Avenue north of Olive Road). Florida 289 links north Pensacola and the Ferry Pass community with the bayfront of the city. Photo taken 05/07/04.
Olive Road westbound at the southbound beginning of Florida 289. The 2001 project to improve this intersection saw the addition of a second turn lane for Florida 289 southbound and continued four lanes of Ninth Avenue northward from the Interstate 10 overcrossing to Olive Road. Florida 289 Guide

Florida 289 North
The commercialized intersection of Ninth Avenue and Florida 742 (Creighton Road). Traffic is constituting an increasing issue at this junction, with the 2002 opened Walmart Supercenter nearby on Florida 742 west. Eastward Florida 742 cuts a swath through residential areas to U.S. 90 (Scenic Highway). Photo taken 05/09/04.
Florida 289 South
The first southbound Florida 289 shield is posted at the intersection with Florida 290 (Olive Road). Ninth Avenue saw expansion and safety improvements between Olive Road and the Interstate 10 overcrossing. There is no access between Florida 289 and Interstate 10 at this time. Photo taken 11/16/03.
Approaching Florida 742 (Creighton Road) on Ninth Avenue southbound. Florida 742 expanded to five lanes in 1995 between Florida 289 and Florida 291 (Davis Highway). The highway is a primary arterial between the two commercial strips that Ninth and Davis compose. Photo taken 11/16/03.
Florida 289 (Ninth Avenue) as it leaves the intersection with Florida 742 (Creighton Road). Ninth Avenue carries four overall lanes between its northern and southern termini. Photo taken 05/09/04.
Southbound Florida 289 (Ninth Avenue) at junction Florida 750 (Airport Boulevard) near Pensacola Junior College and Cordova Mall. Airport Boulevard constitutes a busy arterial between Pensacola Regional Airport and U.S. 29 (Pensacola Boulevard). Florida 750 applies to the stretch between Ninth and 12th Avenues to the left. Photo taken 05/09/04.
Just one half mile south on Florida 289 is the equally busy intersection with Florida 296. Florida 296 travels eastward along Bayou Boulevard to 12th Avenue and U.S. 90 (Cervantes Street) along the Bayou Texar. Westward the state route follows Brent Lane to Florida 291 (Davis Highway), junction Interstate 110 (Exit 5), and U.S. 90 (Mobile Highway). Photo taken 05/09/04.
1.3 miles further south is the northern terminus of Florida 295 (Fairfield Drive). Like Florida 296 to the north, Florida 295 travels a circuitous path north of central Pensacola between Florida 289 and Pensacola Naval Air Station. Photo taken 05/09/04.
Florida 289 southbound at Fairfield Drive. The shield assembly is incorrect in that Florida 295 does not continue north to the left. Fairfield Drive however continues another three blocks to its merge with 12th Avenue just south of Florida 296 (Bayou Boulevard) and Summit Boulevard. Motorists turning south onto Florida 296 reach the confluence of Florida 291 and Interstate 110 within one half mile. Photo taken 05/09/04.
Continuing south on Ninth Avenue (Florida 289) one half mile ride to Texar Drive. Florida 289 loses its middle turn lane from Florida 295 southward to the southern terminus at U.S. 98 & U.S. 98 Business (Chase Street). Photo taken 05/09/04.
Junction shield for the very short Florida 752 alignment of Texar Drive on Ninth Avenue south. Florida 752 stems west between Florida 289 and Florida 295 (Fairfield Drive) across Interstate 110. The route tallies just 0.6 miles. Photo taken 05/09/04.
Use Florida 752 westbound to access U.S. 29 (Palafox Street) and Florida 295 at H Street. Florida 752 also intersects the one-way street couplet of Florida 291 three blocks to the west. Texar Drive continues east 0.9 miles to 18th Avenue through a residential area. Photo taken 05/09/04.
Florida 289 enters an older neighborhood of Pensacola and the city street grid from Cross Street southward. Pictured here is the signalized intersection with Jordan Street one mile north of U.S. 90 & 98 (Cervantes Street). Maxwell Street one block to the north provides access onto Interstate 110 northbound five blocks to the east. Photo taken 05/09/04.
Southbound Florida 289 (Ninth Avenue) at Blount Street in the working class part of Pensacola. Blount Street travels 0.6 miles west underneath the Interstate 110 viaduct to U.S. 29 (Palafox Street). Photo taken 05/09/04.
The signed portion of Florida 289 draws to a close at the merge with U.S. 98 at Cervantes Street. U.S. 98 eastbound turns south onto Ninth Avenue with Florida 289 from U.S. 90 and Cervantes Street for an eight block drive to Chase Street east. Florida 289 does not end until Chase Street but is unsigned otherwise. Photo taken 05/09/04.
U.S. 98 east & Florida 289 southbound at Gregory Street one block from the Pensacola Civic Center. U.S. 98 westbound turns northward from Gregory Street onto Ninth Avenue for the five-block drive to Cervantes Street here. U.S. 98 Business begins and continues Gregory Street to Interstate 110 north and Alcaniz Street south. Photo taken Photo taken 05/09/04.
