Chickasaw Area Photographs

Junction Interstate 65 shield on West Lee Street eastbound at Delaware Avenue. Traffic from Prichard via the connecting Thompson Boulevard and Wasson Avenues access West Lee Street via Delaware Avenue or Comanche Streets. Photo taken 03/15/02.
First of two original button copy guide signs on West Lee Street, eastbound before the diamond interchange. West Lee Street widens to four lanes in anticipation of the Interstate 65 Exit 10 junction. Overall, this interchange primarily serves residential areas of Chickasaw and northern Prichard. There are a few businesses on the east side of the interchange, but the commercial hearth of the city is along U.S. 43/Telegraph Road. Photo taken 10/25/03.
Interstate 65 and button copy guide sign on West Lee Street eastbound at the northbound ramp. The signage on westbound is fully reflectorized. It should also be noted that in all of Mobile County, that these are the last two original signs for Interstate 65. Photo taken 03/15/02.
To connect Telegraph Road/U.S. 43 to West Lee Street and Interstate 65, traffic must take a series of turns in residential neighborhoods. The above map has the routing one must followed accented with thicker gray lines. In this photograph, West Lee Street comes to an intersection with Kansas Street. Traffic headed to U.S. 43 is advised to turn left. Photo taken 04/17/02.
The same Kansas/West Lee Street intersection from Kansas Street southbound. Notice the faded Interstate 65 trailblazer and newer hurricane evacuation sign. Photo taken 04/17/02.
Three blocks to the north on Kansas Street is this U.S. 43 trailblazer pointing drivers eastbound on Sutherland Drive. Speed limits are low through this area, as many single family and town homes dot the landscape. Photo taken 04/17/02.
Make the right-hand turn from the above photograph, and one sees this relic of a yield sign for eastbound Sutherland Drive. Original highway stop and yield signs were in this black on yellow format. However, it was thought that those signs needed to garner more attention, so the MUTCD changed the color scheme to the current standards. Note also the use of the phrase "RIGHT OF WAY". This command is often see as "GIVE WAY" in Europe or Australia, but in the U.S. it is largely omitted from highway signage. Sutherland Drive directly connects with U.S. 43 a few short blocks to the east. Photo taken 04/17/02.
