Alabama 17 is the secret multiplex for U.S. 45 in the state of Alabama with the exception of the northernmost 17 miles where Alabama 57 takes over. The portion of Alabama 17 in Washington County that overlaps with U.S. 45 is actually signed from the Mobile County line northward. Alabama 17 North
Alabama 17 is indeed signed along U.S. 45 in Washington County. This northbound reassurance shield is located at Deer Park near the intersection with Washington County 8. Alabama 17 diverges from U.S. 45 two miles to the north (see next two photos) en route to the county seat of Chatom (pop. 1193). Photo taken 02/10/02.

marks the southern terminus of unsigned Alabama 57. Alabama 57 continues northward as the state highway
compliment for U.S. 45 to the state line near State Line, Mississippi. U.S. 45 continues northward to
Waynesboro, Quitman, and Meridian, Mississippi, while Alabama 17 continues through the Black Belt to small

Before the Coffeeville crossing of the Tombigbee River was completed, U.S. 84 was located on U.S. 43 and Alabama 56 to the south.
