Alabama 5

| Alabama 5 South
|
|---|
| Split of Bibb County 27 from Alabama 5 southbound.
The two will again meet within the next five miles. County 27 parallels Alabama 5 throughout Bibb County,
with at least four crossovers. This most likely was the original alignment for the state highway.
Photo taken near the West Blocton community (pop. 1,372) on 08/10/02.

| Signage assembly on Alabama 5 southbound at the interchange
with U.S. 82. Truck Alabama 219 leaves Alabama 5, and rejoins its parent to the east via U.S. 82. Truck
Alabama 25 enters the picture from U.S. 82 west, and continues south with Alabama 5 to Alabama 25.
The U.S. 82 bypass of Centreville opened during early 2002.
It is a four-lane bypass, that aids in traffic movements between the Tuscaloosa and Montgomery metropolitan
areas. Photo taken 08/10/02.
|
| Also within the area of the U.S. 82/Alabama 5 crossing, is Bibb County 28. This photo looks southbound at a shield assembly for the southbound intersection with the county route. Photo taken 08/10/02.
|
| Continuing beyond the U.S. 82 interchange on Alabama 5 south/Truck Alabama 25 west, is this junction with Bibb County 58. The county highway is the original alignment of U.S. 82, and spurs from U.S. 82 southeast into Centreville. Eventually the highway transitions into Alabama 58. This is a rare instance where a State highway number continues onto a county route. Photo taken 08/10/02.
|
| Like the U.S. 82 junction with Alabama 5, the U.S. 80
junction is also a full interchange. 29 miles to the west is the town of Demopolis (pop. 7540) and U.S. 43.
24 miles eastward, U.S. 80 travels to the city of Selma (pop. 20512), and in 69 miles is the capital city of
Montgomery is reached.
For advocates of extending Interstate 85 westward to Interstate 20/59 near Meridian, is this empty scene of
four-lane U.S. 80. U.S. 80 between the U.S. 11 at Cuba and Alabama 17 south of York was just as quiet.
Photo looks from the Alabama 5 overpass, taken on 08/10/02.
|
| Nightfall descends upon the southern terminus of
Alabama 5 at U.S. 43. An end shield is posted. The intersection surprisingly was not governed by a traffic
light, as U.S. 43 is fairly commercialized with moderate amounts of traffic between Alabama 5 and the town of
Thomasville (pop. 4,649). Photo taken 08/10/02.
